Question on padsicles

FTM here and I would like to make some padsicles for pp. I'm sure you ladies have heard of them and hopefully some have made/used them before.

I plan on making them with giant pads, witch hazel and aloe. My question is when you wrap them back up in their wrapper, part of the pad is going to touch another part of pad. So two parts with aloe and witch hazel will be touching. When I take them out of the freezer and unfold, will they rip apart?

I hope this is making sense. I see a lot of instructions say to wrap in Reynolds wrap but that's seems like a waste to me. Tia.

Re: Question on padsicles

  • I haven't understood the wrapping back up part either. If you wrap them up the way they came (all folded up), how do you unfold the frozen pad?

  • I used the part that you peel off and put it back on to wrap them. I too am a FTM. Made mine over the weekend. Hope that makes sense.

  • Yes. I'm Curious if it would stick to itself and rip.
  • I left the outer plastic part on and folded them back so the plastic part is still between the layers. If that makes sense? Then I wrapped them in foil. My sister made some a few months back for her first and said she folded hers to freeze. She says when they are frozen you unfold them and they are kinda crescent shaped. Then they'll thaw/shape to you when applied near your body.
  • I made some and rolled them up like a jelly roll. The kind I got were terrifyingly huge and had a piece of slick paper in the middle which you peel off to expose the adhesive on the wings.

When I opened them I left the plastic packaging on the outside. The I took the paper off, applied goo, put the paper back and then rolled them up from the end. The goo is only touching the paper or the plastic packaging.

I just went and opened one and it was no problem! Although now I am freaking out because I can't imagine how angry my poor bits will have to be for that to feel nice! Eeeek!
  • Ok. Am I missing something. What is a padsicle? Like for your crotch after baby?

  • I made mine with newborn diaper last time and used tea instead of water and witch hazel. They were a God-send!!! I froze them folded in half, just like they come in the package of diapers!

Yes! You get the biggest pads you can basically find, pour some witch hazel and aloe gel on them and then freeze. They are supposed to be heavenly to your lady bits.

I've also seen that lavender essential oil is good as well to add to them. But I'm allergic to lavender so I'm leaving that part out.
  • I'd think freezing flat or flat-ish would be best.
Depending on the brand you use, I'd think some would be very likely to rip the cover if you freeze folded.

I personally just froze a bit of water in a ziplock baggie and froze them flat. Then I had a disposable cloth (similar to a baby wipe, but dry, and thicker) that I wrapped it in when I wore it with a pad.
    It worked wonderfully for me.
  • Interesting. The hospital used the blue shoe covers and put ice in them. Or lined a pad with tucks. So do they drip everywhere when they thaw??

  • I used ones with wings so the wings are folded in the middle with the paper over them (I refolded the wings after applying the goo).  So when I folded them back up, the first fold had the pad resting on the wing paper, and the second fold had that part of the pad touching the plastic backing of the first folded part.  I just tried to unfold one and it worked fine.

I tried rolling the first few like a sushi roll but they didn't stay together very well and it made the goo squish out the sides.  It worked much better to fold them the same way they came.

  • Last time the hospital used newborn diapers and froze them. I didn't think so freeze my own when I got home but this time I am for sure! Where do you purchase witch hazel?

Any pharmacy or Walmart. It's pretty common should be able to get almost anywhere. I found mine in the area with rubbing alcohol, peroxide and bandages.

  • @Brittlamarche You can get witch hazel lots of places - I got mine at target :)

I froze mine flat in a single layer and then once they were frozen I stacked them up and wrapped them in aluminum foil.  My midwife recommends only using them for the first 24 hours so I only made 6 of them.  They were awesome though!

Someone posted this the other night, I just used this link and someone asked her the same question in the comments. I made them last night, got the kind with the wings in the picture here and just undid the paper from one side of the wings and then did it back up and rolled in onto itself with that piece of backing/paper still on there. She says to do it like a sushi roll: https://www.tallmomtinybaby.com/2013/05/padsicles-new-mom-perfect-companion.html

  • Looks like I should have gotten the ones with wings :-/ but I didn't see any Kotex brand that did. Oh well, trial and error. I'll be experimenting tomorrow. Thanks everyone!
  • I have been thinking of making these....just a few questions. How many would people recommend making? And the aloe, is it just the same aloe you'd use for a sunburn?
