Living room furniture, glass safe?

We are eyeing a new coffee table for our living room and found one we both like... But it's partially glass on the top. I'm a FTM so I'm leery about how a toddler/young kiddo would do around it. It's tempered so it's supposedly pretty strong, but do you think it could be hazardous, especially if DS bangs or drops toys on it? I've attached a picture. Thanks for the input!

  • Its probably fine. It doesn't look like it has any sharp edges which would be my only concern.

I'd say just get your coffee table and teach the kid not to bang on it.

Agreed. We have glass doors on our entertainment center and it's been fine.

Not a super concern from a safety standpoint for me, but it would be from a cleaning standpoint.  That looks like one of the coffee tables where the glass isn't sealed to the wood, but instead pops up.  Anytime anything spills on your table, it will get caught between the glass and the wood on the little ledge that keeps the glass in place.  It gets narsty, even if you clean it regularly.  And every time you take the glass off to clean it (if you're klutzy like me) you risk cracking/damaging it.

  • I wouldn't. We had a glass top coffee table that we moved to the basement when dd became mobile. She's a slammer. There's only so much redirecting I want to do in a day. For my sanity I would not get another glass table.

  • We had a glass kitchen table until a few months before my son turned 4. I know it's not the same as a coffee table, but toys were dropped on it. He used to play under it and when he'd stand up, he'd smash his head on the underside of the glass. It never broke. Of course, it was covered in fingerprints ALL THE TIME, so if that bugs you, then be prepared to clean it several times a day. Top and underside.

Glass tables are so damn sturdy I don't think a toddler banging a toy would break it. We had ours through college and drunk boys couldn't smash ours. However, same as PPs, they're a bitch to keep clean. Sooo many finger prints.
  • As long as it is tempered glass then you are good from a safety standpoint. If it breaks then it breaks into small rounded pieces instead of shards, so you aren't likely to get cut.

  • We removed our coffee table (wood) from the living room all together when DD became mobile. We live in a small condo, so we wanted the floor space to play with DD and DH was worried about the sharp corners. At DD's next pedi appointment he also recommended to remove coffee tables to avoid injuries.
