Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Activities for 14 mo

My daughter is just about 14 mo. She is bored with her toys and needs to be constantly moving. Does anyone have any indoor suggestions for play?

Re: Activities for 14 mo

  • Hide and seek (like a blanket over your head or hide behind a pillow)
Tag (really just chasing each other)
    Ball (more like fetch)

  • We're in the same spot. My son is also bored with his toy collection and I'm running out of ideas.

Ive seen some great ideas for sensory bins on some mom blogs (Rainy Day Mum, I believe was one of them) that I think I'm gonna try.

  • Babycenter has ideas for toddler activities.
  • DS's favorite thing to do is play in water. At that age I put a half inch of water in his high chair tray and let him go to town with dishes and spoons. Now, I put a small tub of water on the floor, kind of like an indoor water table. It keeps him busy for at least 45 minutes.

  • M is 13 months and she's still pretty mouthy, so a lot of things are on hold for a bit.  I have been meaning to try playing with balloons, bubbles, and maybe play doh.  She has crayons and markers that she almost gets how to use, so perhaps you LO would like those.  Stickers are huge with her.  She can stick them down but needs some help getting them off her fingers.  We spend a ton of time on puzzles.  She can do the big shapes ones now and the ones with complex shapes are good for vocab.  She likes to get out her hairbows and also food in the kitchen to admire and discuss.  We go out--library, baby gym, baby playgroup, walk around neighborhood, mom's group stuff, grocery store, music class.  I find many of the sensory activities are fun for 20 seconds and take forever to make and/or clean up, but many moms love them.  We have started watching Sesame Street and Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood.  She is into singing with actions.  London bridge and whole body movement things.  She likes to dance to baby songs, and some others.  I was thinking of getting Memory or something.  Takes a while to really get the game aspect, but I think she would enjoy naming the items and finding pairs.  She is into scratch and sniff books and flap books.  Maybe some new bath toys.  She is starting to try to feed her dolls and identify their parts, so getting out some stuffed animals or something that might be on a shelf is fun.  We got out the little piano she had in her crib when she was tiny for kicking and she likes playing that with her hands now.
  • The Play At Home Mom blog is great, as is Fun At Home With Kids. Lots for sensory/imaginative play for active kids.

  • We bought these cute animal
Magnets at Barnes and Noble and my 15 mo DD sits at the fridge forever sticking them on and then removing, etc. Its especially helpful when I'm making dinner and want her nearby. Also, just bringing her to other spots in the house that she isn't in that often is fun for her and she gets to dump out my sock drawer while I'm putting laundry away.
  • These are all great ideas. Keep 'em coming! She puts everything in her mouth still so crayons or magnets won't work. Nice days are fine 'cause we can get out and do things, but cold snaps are rough! She likes to empty mommy's purse, shoeboxes of nick-nacks, tupperware cabinet, dresser drawers, etc. but then she's bored again and I have a trail of destruction to clean.

  • pinterest has tons of ideas.

dd loves fingerpainting in a ziploc attached to the window. (make sure to tape around all sides). I also did a ziploc with hairgel and sparkly/fuzzy felt balls that she loved.

  • Finger paints (pinterest has recipes for edible ones that you can make at home), water play, put on some music and dance.

  • I found that putting DD in the tub with colored yogurt to paint with was fun. We also did rice with plastic animals in the tub-reduced the potential of messes. Playdoh was fun for her at that age too-You can make the edible that doesn't taste good, so if she eats it, no big deal, but she probably won't want to try it again.

  • If you have a Pinterest account, do a search for "1 year old activities" or something of the like. I have found some awesome ideas for DS that I probably never would have thought of myself.
