Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Diapers at night

I know I don't post here much at all, but I have a question I think you ladies would be best at answering.

DS is 19mo and for the last month or two we've been having trouble with him peeing out the TOP of the diaper at night.  We have tried Luvs in two sizes and Huggies with the elastic waist.  I know the problem is that he sleeps like this:

Does anyone have recs for anti-gravity diapers?  I feel bad for him when he is sleeping in a puddle of pee in the morning. He got an emergency bath this morning because, yuck. The diapers aren't hardly wet so it is all coming out the top.

Re: Diapers at night

  • lol!  I love those pictures!  I have often found DS sleeping in that position too.  We use Huggies overnight diapers in a size up from his daytime diapers.  I guess I would just try to have more of the diaper up higher in front and make sure it is really snug.

    GL!

  • I thought of something else - could you put pajama bottoms on him so that the elastic waist keeps the diaper snug at the top?

  • He wears two-piece pjs already because he has short legs and the one piece things never fit.  Size 5s seems so big. :(

  • Hmmm.  I would try size 5 - that's what DS wears at night, and the diaper is like over his belly button.  It's always soaked up that high.

  • we went through this and it's still occasionally happening. I went up sizes, tried overnight diapers..finally I just watch what she's drinking the hour or so before bed. This is sometimes hard since we tend to eat dinner later..like an hour or so before she goes to bed...but I just try and limit the liquids and saw a bit of an improvement. If she goes nuts and downs a sippy of water, we know they'll be a leak.
  • @hijinx we will try the penis pointing tonight.  Diapers are usually a fight but I'll try.

@hollygb22 He can down 1-3 cups of milk before bed.  Last night was a particularly thirsty 3 cup night.  I never made that correlation before. D'oh!  I'll pay more attention to when it happens.

  • We've had the same problem.  It's gotten better lately.  We went up from 4s to 5s at night.  I also try to fasten it fairly snugly and towards the top so none of the absorbent part of the diaper is above the fastener (when DH gets DS ready for bed at night I find we have more leakage issues and I've noticed that he seems to fasten it fairly low in comparison so some of the absorbent material is above the fasteners).  I also try to point the penis down as others have mentioned.

    Good Luck!
  • They have diaper boosters that you can add to the diaper to increase absorbency. There are also these blowout blockers. DS wears size 4 during the day and 5 at night because he needs that extra absorbency.

  • All of the PP's gave great suggestions! The one other thing I could recommend that hasn't already been brought up would be maybe putting a cloth diaper cover over his disposable. GL!

  • LOL at those pictures. We've had the same problem before. I just make sure to size up the diaper and make sure it's pulled up quite a bit higher in the front. Be sure that the tabs are not too tight or too loose.

  • What about trying a diaper cover just for overnight?  They make quite a variety of waterproof diaper covers in different materials that might work preventing a mess and all over leakage!

Just google diaper covers and you'll find tons.. cloth, vinyl etc. etc..

It's anecdotal, but through two kids I've found that the pound increments written on a diaper box mean nothing after baby is a few months old. My daughter has been in a Huggies 5 for at least 6 months. All of our diaper issues resolved by going up a bigger size.

If you want to give it a shot, buy a small package at a place like Target or Walmart and you'll know after 1-3 diapers if that size isn't helping, then you can just return them for cash or credit.

  • What about folding the top of the diaper in towards his stomach- sort of blocking the pee from coming out? If DS's diaper folds out it tends to wick into his PJ pants. Folding it in seems to help.

  • DS sleeps on his tummy all the time so I was having this problem also.  We rarely see it happen anymore.  We make sure the front of the diaper is high over his belly button.  We have these in size 2T. We put one of these over his diaper and make sure the front of it is pulled up over his tummy so it's at his chest.  It's been working great.  If they smell like pee, I'll throw them in with the rest of his laundry and let them air dry.

  • agree with going up a size and watching fluids close to bed.  also warm bath close to bed can help peeing before bed
  • A size up in Up & Ups has been working great the last few nights.  He hasn't drank more than 1 cup at night, but no leaking!

DS was getting really bad soaking wet diapers overnight.  I started limiting his fluids with snack which he has right before bed and it seems to be getting better.  We do a size up in night time diapers.
  • My 18mo DS sleeps the same way. I use Pampers Extra Protection diapers (I can only find them online or at Babies R Us) in a size up from his regular diapers. And always always always make sure when you put his diaper on, you remember to point his penis down. Every time I've forgotten to do that, DS has leaked out the top (since he's peeing up instead of down). It seems like a simple thing but it has saved my DS from many puddles, lol. GL!

  • I have a 19 month old girl, but it happens with her too! I think its too much milk before bed...Lil started drinking way more milk (growth spurt) and she pees through even when I change her minutes before bed. I might try some overnights because there is no way she will let me cut back on the milk ;)

  • Pampers Baby Dry. Mine sleeps in that position too and so far we haven't had any leaks (although a VERY full diaper in the morning).
