In all seriousness, that machine has saved my life a few times in the early weeks, but I suppose I do use it in excess sometimes currently. I should start to wean her away from it.
I've never not used one for #1. He's napping with it right this second. And we do a little routine when he goes to bed and it starts with "turn on your sound machine...." :-|
We keep an old iPhone with the white noise app in E's room. I don't think it's too loud. Hmmmm....
This is what I do too but I have it connected to a wireless speaker..I hope I haven't been making it too loud.. Hmm this article at least makes you stop and think!
How many people actually keep it turned up the entire way though? Ours is across the room from LO's crib (although the room isn't THAT big) and once she's in the crib, I turn the timer on for 30 minutes. I agree with a PP - someone out there can find something wrong with EVERYTHING these days.

I'm on our third sound machine because I can't find one that's loud ENOUGH. I rock her with my iphone on my chest playing a white noise app. I probably won't be changing anything. Sorrynotsorry.
Ours in on all the time, but it's on the lowest setting and it's more than 6 feet away from his crib...hope I'm not ruining him. I do want to start using it less just so he can learn to sleep without it too.
Is there really anything left that's completely safe?! Never thought I'd see the day where people tell us to worry about white noise. Damn - I cant tell you how many times I fell asleep during a movie back in the day and would be violently awakened by the white noise on blast when the VCR turned the movie off (VCR-lol). My hearing is great.
I just downloaded a free app, decibel 10th. Then set it in the crib and turned on my iPod/speaker set up. It was about 70 decibels. So probably too loud for all night I guess. I turned it down a bit and now it's sitting around 55 decibels. So you could download that app and check it yourself for peace of mind if your an all-night sound machine person like me!
DD1 fell asleep to her Sleep Sheep (ocean waves sound) almost every night from birth till age 2. Her hearing is perfectly fine. I've been using the SS again for this LO for the past few weeks and won't be changing that routine. I do attach it to the outside of the crib rail, but down by her feet rather than her head and it's probably on less than 50% volume - my kids seem to do okay with it as subtle background noise.
Re: Sound machine warning
I stick my iPad in the room sometimes to play white noise, but then I want it back once he falls asleep.
