T1 - How high is too high?

I've been so hungry the past couple days, but as a type 1 diabetic, I'm too afraid to eat too much.  I have yet to have my appointment with my maternal fetal medicine doctor and OB (that's on Monday) so I'm curious.. can I eat meals with a larger carb content?  If my blood sugar is in range 2 hours after I eat, how high is too high during those 2 hours?

I am not pregnant but if I recall correctly from my pre-conception appointment(s) with both my endo and High Risk OB, I believe she wants me 60(!!!)-90 pre-meal, no higher than 140 1 hour after meal, and no higher than 110-120 2 hours post-meal.  I have the numbers written down at home.

I also recall the OB telling me that she's going to want me to be between 30 and 45 grams of carbs for meals.  And that routine will be my best friend.  She said many pregnant T1s will eat the same things for all meals.  For 40 weeks.  Gah!

ETA: Personally, when I get pregnant, I probably won't start freaking out until I'm above 160 for an extended amount of time.  Obviously highs are going to happen and will be out of your control, but I think the occasional bad number is OK.

  • I had some leeway with my OB. I never saw a high risk doctor just a diabetes educator (she was a nurse) in addition to my OB. I tested 1 hr after each meal. As long as it was below 120 I was good. For the morning fasting he wanted it to be 95 or below. I saw a nutritionist when I found out I was expecting and we made out a meal plan or meal options.
I am not pregnant right now either. I had my first a year ago.
  • My perinatal group and endocrinologist want less than 140 after an hour and less than 120 after two hours. And between 60-90 at wakeup, with the preference at the low end in the 60s or 70s.

  • I had my appointment this morning and just as I expected, and concurrent with what everyone has said.  60-90 before meals, 140 1 hour later and 120 two hours after.  Thanks everyone!
