Spare room ideas

We have a spare room in our house that literally just has a bed nothing else. DH and i were talking about what to do with it. DS has a toy room downstairs and we do not need an "office". Would two playrooms be silly? I thought of doing a "reading room" where ds could read books or do puzzles IDK. What would you do?

Do you do crafts or sewing? 2 playrooms if they're on different floors would be fine. A library with all of your books...
I use to sew but not so anymore. No real crafts other than crap i find on pinterest!!!

If it were a library it would hold of of DS's books. I have a kindle so I wouldn't really need space for my books.

Would it fit a sectional or a few recliners? You wouldn't need a ton of furniture & then mount a gigantic TV or have a screen. ;)
Let me put it this way.... There is a queen size bed and a rocking chair right now. Then about a 3 ft path to walk on one side b/c the bed is against the wall......
  • Do you already have a guest bedroom?  We have a similar room - large enough to fit a full size bed and not much else.  But we have guests sleep over often enough that it never feels like wasted space.

We currently use it as a guest bedroom but my nieces are the only ones who utilize it. I thought of getting a futon or a sleeper love seat and then turning it into a quiet reading/puzzle room for DS.

@sandandsea I love the walk in closet idea. My friend has a room like this. DH would never go for it though.
  • We have a guest room with a bed and dressers (which I mostly use to store clothes I get for DD at consignment sales in sizes she isn't yet ready for).  It also holds ALL THE LAUNDRY as I'm usually too lazy to fold it.

Other ideas - computer room (but we're old school and have two desktops on big desks, and most people aren't this silly), craft room (oh goodness do we have too many crafting supplies - painting, sewing, crocheting, paper crafts, kids crafts, etc...), exercise room.

I like the reading room idea, though.

DS has two playrooms. It's kind of ridiculous when I think about it, lol. But it's because he has a few very large toys that wouldn't fit in one room. However, the rooms are adjacent and on the same floor -- he basically has the dining room and the living room, and the front "office" is now where the sofa and tv are.

What if you made the upstairs the quiet/reading room for everyone? You could have books and puzzles and quiet games like you say, have a few oversized chairs for adults and maybe floor pillows for ds. And if it's hardwood up there, a super soft area rug would be nice. Decorate with alphabet letters, book sleeves, and maybe a calming picture.

You could also make it the room of lost hobbies, like our third bedroom. There's my sewing machine with random material, lots of yarn and knitting needles and crochet hooks, drawing and painting supplies, two guitars.... I fall in love with hobbies and then leave them abandoned up there, lol.

    Home dungeon?

  • Ours is a guest room.  All of DD's stuffed animals live on what is called the "buddy bed".  It's sad, really.  I also have a small dresser that holds seasonal linens and extra sheets.

It's also where DH sleeps when one of us is sick:)
  • The good thing is is that you can start the room off one way and as your tastes/interests/needs evolve, the room can evolve too. Nothing needs to be set in stone. DH has "guy room" as our 3rd bedroom. I'd love to have a real guest room but we'd have to either move to another house or add an addition for that.

Lol at this. We have a spare room but we use it as a guest room. I do love the idea of creating a library/room.

  • If we had a small extra room, I'd convert it into a workout room. When I can just have everything left out, like the weight bench and the treadmill, I actually use it.
