Perm experiences?

Has anyone gotten a perm while pregnant? I did with my first and it turned out just fine, but I'm nervous to with my second, bc my hormones are different. I'm 31 weeks now. Just wanting any experiences. TIA!!! :-)

  • It sounds like I'm the odd ball out X_X I got a perm when I was 21 weeks, and it turned out perfectly fine! My OB said it was perfectly safe. I only smelled the chemicals for a couple seconds because I was covered with a cap the entire time. I'll be getting one more before my due date. No problems at all with the hormones affecting it!

  • I don't recommend a perm period! I had STRAIGHT STRAIGHT HAIR (native American) and it will not curl for the life of me. When it does it doesn't last long. Even with the perm I was putting in sooooo much product it was crunchy. Everyone's right on the smell it's disgusting and VERY potent. I would save the money and get tht new auto curling tool they came out with that's my plan around Xmas for a little gift to myself.

  • In all seriousness, OP, a friend got a perm before her most recent pregnancy and she actually looked ok. It is apparently still a thing.

I don't know anything about having it done while pregnant but I wouldn't be comfortable with it, personally.

  • I got more of a body wave than a perm at 22 weeks and it turned out the same as the one I got non-pregnant. I had stick straight hair before ds1 but while pregnant it became (and stayed) wavy. The body wave just enhances that and makes it more predictable. I use only a small amount of product now and it doesn't get crunchy. I can also straighten it when I want.

  • @awc1986 On the one hand, yay! Jon Bon Jovi! On the other hand, such a disappointing photo. Not his most flattering days, those.

I was thinking more along these lines (with apologies to Bradley Cooper fans)...

He's still sexy with a perm. Hot damn!

  • My mom and I were just laughing about all the rules of pregnancy now vs when she had me 29 years ago. She used to get her hair permed on the regular when she was pregnant with me and I'm fine (IMO). With that said, I have curly hair that I straighten. We always want what we don't have but if say stick with what you have and put the perm money towards something else.
  • I'm African American and have gotten 2 relaxers (same as perm but it makes my hair straight instead of curly) already and I plan to get a third before the baby comes. I did wait until after the first trimester and made sure everything was well ventilated. All seems well here.
  • My mom had some kind of perm horror story from when she was pregnant with me.  She said it looked so awful that it made her cry.  This is when it was finally growing out.  (Also check out that hot, hot maternity shirt with the neck tie.  I hope she never sees this.)

Thank you for your feedback ladies! My hair is naturally curly, but I get a perm about once a year to tame things, help control the curls, & give volume to my roots since my hair is longer. I appreciate your thoughts good & bad!!! :)
  • My hair is naturally curly, too. Have you asked your hairdresser what best products to use rather than getting a perm? I've found that Miss Jessie's products + an infuser works wonders on my untamable hair.
  • I've tried multiple times to get a perm at different salons, and NOBODY would do it. I have terribly frizzy hair, and i thought a perm might work. Oh well. As for having it done while pg, I personally wouldn't do it, with all the chemicals, I would be too paranoid about it. But maybe talk to your OB about it, see what they recommend.

I will definitely look up those products, thank you!!! The Pantene I use leaves my hair flaky sometimes - yuck! @sammy.k
  • I'm dying to go have my Keratin straightening treatment done but I'm holding off until after pregnancy. The smell is pretty bad and honestly I can't see sitting in a chair for hours.
  • I haven't had a perm since junior high but I remember the smell being really strong. I do get highlights while pregnant. My hairdresser (and web search) says theyre ok since the chemicals don't touch the scalp. I have had a keratin treatment (basically a straight perm) pre pregnancy and the smell of the chemicals was so strong I wouldn't do it again while pregnant.
  • "Big perm! I mean big worm!" Sorry, couldn't help myself.
