Does hand foot and mouth cause a rash all over the body?

Sorry for another hfm question, but the triage nurse at the pediatrician wasn't too much help. DD started being really tired and cranky a few days ago. Then two days ago I noticed a very mild rash on her back and stomach. Now the rash has migrated to her arm and legs, so at first I thought it was just another one of "those" childhood viruses. However, she hasn't been eating well at all either and this morning she refused breakfast and said her mouth hurt. I looked inside and sure enough she has a large white sore on the side of her tongue. So then I checked her palms and she has some red spots on one of them, and a few on one of her feet. The nurse said hfm typically doesn't cause a rash on the body, so I am confused. We were supposed to have her birthday party on Sunday but now I am thinking we should probably cancel....

  • I don't think either one of my LO's got the rash all over their bodies, but DS had it all over his bottom, hands, feet, and a few in his mouth.

  • My son, at 8 months, got the worst hand, foot and mouth case our huge pediatric office said they had ever seen. The rash literally covered his entire torso, upper legs, wrists, hands, ankles and feet! He went from being fine on Sunday to waking up Monday COVERED in this red rash. It's apparently not common, but it does happen! Hope she's okay and can have her party!
  • we went through it in December and he only had blisters inside his mouth and a few on the sides and like maybe 5 little dots on his bottom

  • but it is very VERY contagious I probably would delay the party. My son gave it to my sister who is in her 40's

  • Yep, we canceled the party, and definitely good that we did. She has been a walking train wreck for the past few days - I would never want to share this with anyone! I am just hoping I don't get it since I'm pregnant...

  • I caught it from DS when he was an infant and I had the rash all over my body.  It was worst on my hands and feet but it was definitely everywhere, including my face.  HORRIBLE!  (DS had just a couple of little spots on his hands, luckily, and wasn't too bothered by it).
