daughter won't drink milk.... help!

Long story short, my family has always let kids drink out of bottles until they were two.  My DD would drink water, watered down apple juice, or flavored water out of a sippy cup with no problem. Well we took the bottle away two weeks ago and she still refuses to drink milk out of anything else.  We've bought new special cups, coffee cups, crazy straws, straw cups, milk in a juice box (that sounds so disgusting to me, but I am desperate!) and nothing is working to be honest.  I am offering her milk three times a day but she legitimately won't even sip it if she knows there is milk in there.  I've tried being tricky too and just giving her a cup that you can't see through and she will take a sip and spit the milk out!  I feel conflicted because I called the pediatrician's office because it is day 14 without milk and the nurse felt strongly that I should give it to her in a bottle because she needs milk.  DH and I really want her off the bottle because she is too old for it.  Well lesson learned and I will definitely take the bottle away from my next LO a lot sooner. Any advice or experience with this kind of thing?  How long did your LO hold out?

  • I don't see the big deal in this either. My 2.5 year old wanted nothing to do with milk for the longest time either. Now she's okay with it but definitely prefers plain water (or water with lemons or other fruit in it..high class kid..ha).

WTH to me. She's not starving and loves all other dairy. Life goes on. It's not a battle worth fighting.

I also think it's weird the nurse is so on you about this. I told my pedi and he told me it wasn't something to care about.

  • Ditto.  My DD went through a period where she would not drink milk and it didn't occur to me to be worried about it.  If she wants milk, she will drink it eventually.  Just keep offering and staying calm.
  • Fluid cow milk is not some magical food that can solely provide calcium (or fat, or protein, or vitamin D) in our diets.  She can get cow dairy from other sources if she likes them (yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese, milk in smoothies, etc.), but she can also get all of those macronutrients and micronutrients from other foods too.

  • Thank you all for your replies!  It makes me feel a bit better.  My DD is a wicked picky eater and only will have an occasional piece of cheese and does not like yogurt or avocado unfortunately.  She is obsessed with fruits.  I might try and tempt her with string cheese or something fun like that.  Thank you all very  much!

Also, LalaMama,  I do agree with you about the flavored water!  My DD was hospitalized about a month ago from pneumonia and needed oxygen support for a week. Well she also got dehydrated and we could only get her to drink flavored water and like a  4 oz apple juice.  Long story short, I'm just worried about her getting dehydrated again so I was trying to let her adjust to no milk before I took away the flavored water but that is on my to do list! The whole IV thing was slightly traumatic for us!
  • As pp said nobody really needs milk provided they are getting the nutrients from other sources.

What about a fresh fruit and/or veggie smoothie made with milk?  Bet LO would drink that!
  • She definitely diesnt need milk if she has an otherwise balanced diet.

My kid can not have milk or soy.  She will have coconut milk sometimes, but otherwise its water and maybe some watered down apple juice.  As long as she is getting other sources of calcium and fat no one really "needs milk

  • My son doesn't like milk of any kind- not even chocolate or strawberry. We give a multivitamin and a calcium supplement (he's monitored by a dietician and GI). You can try food chaining if you'd like to work on getting your child to try milk.

  • Have you tried flavoring the milk with strawberry or chocolate syrup? Our DD loves it that way... then again, she's also a recovering PediaSure junkie.
