Server/bartenders anyone on feet long periods

Is there any other bartenders or servers in this group or anyone on their feet all day? I've been experiencing swollen feet and ankles for the last two months, it's so bad, I'm drinking tons of water quite frankly I don't want to drink anything else, I put my feet up. It's just so uncomfortable that I'm 25 weeks and hurting now I don't know how much longer I can last. When do you ladies plan to stop working?

  • I'm a surgeon (used to a bartender), and stand all day in the OR.  I suggest compression stockings.  You can get a prescription for good ones from your doc (and they should be covered by insurance, but aren't crazy expensive if they aren't).  I was shocked how much better I felt at the end of the day when I started wearing them.  The are a huge pain to put on though (and if you are wearing a skirt, they aren't exactly sexy).

  • I'm a nurse (gotta love those 3 12 hr shifts a week) and all I can say is get some good shoes and sit down whenever possible. I invested in some super supportive "granny" shoes and my feet and back are much less achy throughout my shift than they once were. Good luck!
  • Thank you everyone. I'm going to get new shoes this week. I'm in such a busy restaurant that it's very difficult to take a break, when I eat it's more like grabbing and going
  • I'm a SAHM now, but with my first pregnancy I was on my feet a lot because of work. I pretty much just found comfy shoes. I wore flats when then weather was nice and put inserts in them, then wore uggs when the weather was cold. Once I got home I just soaked my feet. DH helped as he could and would massage my aching feet. That definitely helped!
  • I'm a nurse also. I swear by compression stockings. Also, sit down and put your feet up whenever possible.

I'm a restaurant manager and shifts run anywhere from 9 to 14 hours (on a horrible horrible day lol).
I can't say enough about what a pair of danskos have done for my feet. I haven't gotten to the point of needing the compression socks, but switching to danskos really made a huge difference in my leg, hip and back pain.
I intend to work as close to my due date as possible. Not sure how far I'll make it, but since my leave is unpaid, I really don't want to take too much time before LO is even here.

    Good luck! It sucks!! ;)

I was a flight attendant a while back and a lot of fellow stews (pregnant and not pregnant) absolutely swore by danskos!

  • I'm a nurse and was a preschool teacher when I had my first.  Supportive shoes are my must! Plenty of water seems to help my energy and overall feeling of exhaustion as well.  With as fast paced as my job is, if my body hurts/is tired and I'm thirsty it's a downhill spiral.  Listen to your body and get plenty of rest!
  • I'm a nurse. Danskos, compression tights, staying hydrated, and putting my feet up whenever I can (aka on break). As soon as my shift ends I have them up again as much as possible.
I'll be working until my OB tells me I can't anymore, which with twins could really be at any time. She told me she'd ideally see me on modified bedrest at 24-26 weeks (I'll be 25 weeks tomorrow) so I do my best to follow modified bedrest on my days off and I'm just keeping my fingers crossed to go as long as I can.

  • Another nurse chiming in. Definitely get compression stockings, they work wonders. Also, remember comfort before beauty in the shoe department. I wear business attire when I am in the floor with my students and always wear supportive clogs instead of more fashionable high heels or boots.

  • Server here. I'm going to echo pp about danskos! The only shoe I will wear to work! I haven't had to start wearing compression stockings yet, but they will also help you out!

As for the "breaks" I always have a water bottle handy and to keep me from getting dehydrated. I put it in my mind to drink x amount per shift so I don't forget. I also have a little space next to the computer for my snacks. Hummus and carrots or protein bars work good for me. I can leave them out and nibble when I am ringing in orders. Also, if your restaurant serves mashed pots, they are a lifesaver when I forget to eat!

I plan on working as long as I can, I may cut back a little in the number of shifts a week, we will just see how it goes. Asking about a section closer to the kitchen/service stations may help you cut down on steps too. I've started doing that on really busy nights just so I don't get too exhausted.

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • Im a chef and im on my feet around 12 hours a day. All I can say is if you buy more expensive shoes (ex. Danskos) and they dont work for you, make sure you can exchange them or get store credit! I bought a brand new pair of Danskos the second I found out I was pregnant and I cant wear them. Pre pregnancy I lived in my multiple pairs. However now that im preggo they give me excruciating back pain (due to the "high heel"). Im sure ill be able to wear them post baby, but for now they are a no go.
  • I work at a blood drive and some days I am on my feet for hours on a time and others not so much. When I am on my feet I try to make sure I have water near me all the time. I have about 3 bottle of water just at work and more when I get home. My feet are not swelling yet, but I get tried a lot when I am on my feet for long periods of time.
  • I love my danskos. I have two pairs but since being pregnant they make me worse. I'm in need of new ones as these are 5 years old already.

I wear compression socks. I take Epson salt baths. Someone told me a pool helps too. I have one so ill give it a try.

Good shoes help. Rest if able.
