Breastfeeding

Pumping exclusively amount to feed?

I'm pumping exclusively because my LO won't latch properly (tongue tie and inverted nipples). She's 2 weeks old and was eating 2.5-2.75oz every 3 hours (exactly what I'm pumping every pump session). My husband who us feeding her mostly so I can sleep and pump started combining bottles to feed her about 3.25-3.5oz every 3 hours because he thought she was still hungry. Which she consumes easily. Now I'm out of stored breastmilk. Are we over feeding a 2 week old? Seriously, more than 3 oz seems like a lot, especially when the total daily intake went from 17 oz. per day to 26 oz per day. She was gaining weight yurt fine according to the dr. And I can't imagine a growth spurt clearing out my 30 oz stored in the fridge and 20 oz in the freezer.

Re: Pumping exclusively amount to feed?

  • I don't think you can over feed a baby, as long as you are pacing the bottle feeding appropriately (taking burp breaks, etc). She will stop eating when she's full. I would feed her until she stops on her own even if that means adding formula to the mix.

I don't know your situation but I would urge you to see a few LCs, ENT or pediatric dentist (if you suspect tongue tie) to try to get her back to the breast as EPing is very hard and time consuming.

  • I feel for your frustration (I have been dealing with the same issues and my LO is now almost 8 weeks). His tongue tie was corrected but we have a ways to go with latch and transfer, so I have been pumping full time. Be vigilant in teaching people who will be feeding your child how to do paced feedings. My first was in daycare full time and I always had to educate, as they were going through a ridiculous amount of milk. With that said, my 8-week-old is now consuming, even with paced feedings, over 30 ounces a day. As much as it pains me, we are supplementing with formula until my supply can catch up (if that is even possible). This is so different than my first born, who probably averaged 20-25 ounces. I guess my point is they are all different and sometimes they do truly need more.
  • Thank you! We are pacing feedings and using low flow nipples. I'll be on the lookout for premie nipples. I power pumped yesterday and upped my pumps to over 3 oz every 3 hours. I'm very excited about that. Thank you for all the advice. It's been very helpful!
