Toddlers: 24 Months+

23 months and fighting naps

DD will be 2 at the end of March, but for the last several weeks, she has been fighting her nap so, so hard. She usually wakes up around 7:30 and goes down around 1. She used to sleep for two hours or so and then she'd be up, and bedtime at 8 or 8:30. Now she will just skip the nap all together. She's not crying or anything, she just lays in the crib and rolls around, plays with her feet, her blanket etc.. Anything but lay still and try to sleep.

She is very obviously tired at nap time, so I'm finding it hard to believe that she is ready to stop napping. If I go in to check on her after I've laid her down she's just silly tired and rubbing her eyes, yawning etc. When she skips her nap then she turns into a tiny little monster for the rest of the evening and we usually end up putting her to bed early (7:30). Has anyone experienced this? Did anything help?

Re: 23 months and fighting naps

  • We went through the same thing at around the same age and it was just a phase keep putting her In there and hope for the best - we have maybe one day a week where he doesn't nap but he stays in his crib and has quiet time

  • My DD did that around 22 months.  It was a phase and we would just lay her down in her crib for quiet time and she'd usually fall asleep within an hour after the first week of the phase.  She wasn't crying or anything, just playing around in the crib. Good luck!
  • We went through a phase like that around that age. I wasn't ready to let him give up naps for good since he was clearly tired, so I kept putting him down at the same time every day. It took a few months, but he eventually went back to napping and he still naps most days at 3.

  • This is pretty much my daughter. She'll be 3 in May and started not napping a little after she turned 2 (she was never a great napper to begin with though). I still try to be consistent with putting her down for a nap and she'll sleep once or twice a week, but that's it. Otherwise she talks/sings/plays in her bed. If she's especially cranky but not sleeping, I'll drive her around in the car for a bit and she'll fall asleep. She doesn't transfer to her bed, so I sit in the car with her. It's ridiculous, but the poor girl needs to nap, she just doesn't realize it! I agree with PPs to keep trying to put her down, she can at least have some quiet time. I hope that this is just a phase for you!

  • Well it appears to have been a phase (knock on wood!) She has napped all but one day for the last week. 2 1/2 to 3 hr naps. Thanks for the advice, the consistency paid off.
