OTC Cold Sore Meds?

So, this weekend I developed a cold sore. I get them randomly and I HATE THEM. Normally the slightest tingle puts me on Code Red and running for my Acyclovir Rx, but I'm pretty sure that's a no-go during pregnancy. I cannot stand to just let this nasty little thing take its course - does anyone know if the OTC stuff like Abreva and Campho-Phenique is okay during pregnancy?

Re: OTC Cold Sore Meds?

  • I use valacyclovir and my OB and midwife both said it's totally safe during pregnancy. I used it for a cold sore during first tri. Call your doc, but your prescription is probably fine to take.

  • Grab an ice cube and ice that sucker into oblivion.  If it's still tingly and hasn't taken hold yet, the ice will do wonders. I try for 5-10 minutes several times during the day. It's always helped me.

  • Tea tree oil fixes my cold sores amazingly well. Better than anything I've tried! Just a drop or two on the cold sore itself with a qtip.
