3rd Trimester

Perm experiences?

Has anyone gotten a perm while pregnant? I did with my first and it turned out just fine, but I'm nervous to with my second, bc my hormones are different. I'm 31 weeks now. Just wanting any experiences. TIA!!! :-)

Re: Perm experiences?

  • Nothing you do to your hair chemically during pregnancy will effect the outcome of your hair. Most of it already grew out of your scalp before you were pregnant, and the chemicals don't travel through your follicle to any degree to be any concern to the baby. Not much has been determined about the safety of the fumes or your sensitivity to them. That being said, if your hair has thickened during pregnancy your perm may not take as well.

  • I think she's asking about whether or not the perm worked well, because hair changes while pregnant.    Personally, I haven't noticed any difference in my hair taking color, but I've noticed a pretty big difference in the texture of my hair.  My formerly naturally curly/soft corkscrew curls are now a frizzy mess that's barely wavy in parts.   I hope it changes back after LO is born.

Not sure if I would get a perm while pregnant just because it seems like the results could be...not quite what you expect. And I'd hate to pay a lot of money for that.

  • I've done several perms on pregnant women and only a few times, yes, they've come out differently and a stronger formula needed to be used. Typically late in pregnancy. Not because of hormones but the thickness of their hair mostly. 9 times out of 10 it turns out fine. I'm not a big advocate of perms though anyway. Regardless of pregnancy hormones, changes in texture, or not, the chemicals are really harsh and haven't evolved over the years like other salon treatments.

Thank you ladies! @ashleypixie & @avion22 My hair is naturally curly, but I get a perm about once a year to tame things, help control the curls, & give volume to my roots since my hair is longer. I appreciate your feedback!!! :)
