Heart Racing/ Palpitation Episodes

Anyone having episodes of this? I did from time to time before getting pregnant have these. Like once a year.... chalked up to anxiety. I know palitations can be common with pregnancy. I had one before christmas that seriously lasted an hour. No shortness of breath, fainting or sweating. Just the racing heart. Then probably a month or so ago right as I went to lay in bed to go to sleep. lasted maybe 10 mins. Then had one this friday. Started at 8:30 pm.DH said he would take me to er but I was ok other than the racing heart. I could feel baby moving and kicking. I just knew as soon as we got in car and dropped DD at inlaws it would stop. And by 10pm it did. Again no shortness of breath, tightness in chest etc. Yes yes I know I probably should have gone to the ER.

Re: Heart Racing/ Palpitation Episodes

  • I've had some heart palpitations but they didn't last long enough for me to worry at all.  If you're concerned, I would give your doctor a call just to let him/her know and see what they say.

  • I get palpitations from time to time, but no heart racing. I have cardiac ectopy and leaky heart valves, so I'm sure it's just aggravated by the increased blood volume. You should mention it to your OB, they may want to determine if it is due to anxiety or something else. Otherwise try not to worry too much, palpitations are very common in pregnancy.
  • Yes, before pregnancy and a little more noticeable now that I'm pregnant. I have been told it is due to the extra amount of blood you have pumping through your body!

I also have a heart murmur and anxiety which attributed to the heart flutters before pg.
  • I had those episodes too before I was pregnant, but more now and more noticeable and last longer. Can definitely be because of the increased blood volume and/or anxiety. If you do start feeling other symptoms like faintness or dizziness I'd go to the ER. If they're making you uncomfortable I'd talk to your OB about them, at least mention it either way I guess. Don't worry about them too much. When ya feel them just try to sit down somewhere and take a few slow deep breaths and relax as much as possible.

  • I had episodes like that just before bed back in my second trimester.  It would freak me out how fast my heart was racing and I felt like I couldn't breathe.  My husband would sit with me and help me by going through breath exercises and relaxation techniques.  I asked my OB about it and she told me it was normal, with the hormones and my uterus was expanding and pushing on my diaphragm.  After my second Tri, I haven't encountered any more of those issues.
  • Thanks ladies..... I have read they are common and do try to just relax to get rate back down. I will be 30 weeks tomorrow and maybe now that out of 2nd trimester... they will subside.

    Thanks again.

  • I've had a few times the last 2 months that my pulse has gone up to 120-130 while just sitting on the couch. I brought it up to my dr this morning and he's sending me to see a cardiologist later this week to check for an arrhythmia. He said it's pretty common but still wants to get it checked out. He said if it happens and I get dizzy I need to call him ASAP.

I'd say definitely bring it up at your next appt.

  • Update---- I did bring it up at my appt friday. I saw the PA and she was upset I didn't go to the ER. so I was sent for a 24 hr haulter monitor.Of course no sign of racing heart but will keep eye on it. fun fun.
  • I have been experiencing the same thing, heart racing and palpitations with slight dizzyness. I brought it up to my OB and she said as long as they don't last for an extended amount of time and go away after sitting/laying down and drinking water, I'm okay. If they are ever accompanied with shortness of breath, chest pain, immediate sharp headache, nausea, vomiting, etc, to head to the ER first to get checked out (instead of going straight to L&D). She said to make sure I'm staying properly hydrated and getting enough protein to eat!

  • I had this a lot during the beginning of the 2nd tri and ended up having a heart monitor on for 24 hrs just to be safe and everything was fine. They actually subsided and I had my first one since NYE just this past weekend. Just racing heart, no sweating or dizziness.

I was told the same thing. I've had several episodes of palpitations, a few during my appointments, and my doctor would just have me sit down, take deep breaths for a little while, and drink water. Then she'd check to make sure it was coming down. Mine usually do come with shortness of breath but nothing else so we chalked it up to it being normal for me.

I was concerned a while back that it might be a sign of anemia but one of the ladies here mentioned that it could be correlated with lack of sleep, which I was also having issues with at the time. Since then, I have noticed that it tends to flare up when I'm the most tired/sleep deprived.

  • I've been getting this in my third tri. Chalked it up to pregnancy physiology or being borderline anemic... Maybe I'll mention to my ob at next visit
  • I seem to have this happen with the start of each trimester and they subside. My dr wasn't concerned at all and said it could be mild tachycardia which is super common in pregnancy. It can be a little alarming. I had a few bad spells with it in late 1st trimester. Now it's not nearly as bad, but just started up again.
  • I've had it a couple times but it went away as fast as it came.
  • Yep, lots of heart palpitations this time around. They don't last long, but they're pretty strong. They take my breath away and they feel like baby kicks to the chest. Very odd. Not alarming, though, since they're a common symptom of pregnancy.
