Bath time incident ; ugh.

So I have been so paranoid ever since LO was born about bath time. I read on article on ' dry drowning' and it stuck with me. I kept her in her infant bath for as long as I could. Then we did the sink and she kept pulling up to stand so then we put a laundry basket in our tub and that seemed to work for a while. Well tonight we decided we'll try out letting her just be in the tub. She is a wiggle worm and we have a claw foot tub and it is a little high so she tries to pull up and she went after her toy and slipped right through my grip and went under. It happened for a split second and she was fine just got a little shook up. Fast forward to the end of the bath we were about to take her out and it happened again.

Needless to say we'll be sticking with the laundry basket for a while but I am just so paranoid that something can happen. I should have never googled because all I see are articles of dry drowning and I am a mess. Bad mom of year award goes to me. ugh.

Has this happened to anyone else? Im not really sure what I am looking for but I needed to vent.

  • You're not a bad Mom, stop it! I'm sure it has or will happen to everyone at some point. I know it's scary, but no harm done. Just hug the LO and give yourself a break.

  • DS has gone under 2 or 3x and the dry drowning scares the crap out of me too. I learned about it on the Dr G medical examiner show.

I had never heard of it until I googled just now.

It sounds like you are being as careful as possible and that by no means makes you a bad mommy

Lo hates bath time now so she just stands and wants me to hold her so I cam easily see how a wiggly baby can slip and go under. I am going to get a bathmat and maybe that will help.

  • I really need to stop googling. I know the incident affected me more then her. She was happily playing.

I think I am going to look into a bath mat as well. I just feel so horrible about it and will most likely be up all night thinking about it. ugh.

  • All of my kids have gone under at some point too. Not leaving her alone and you grab her right away is the main thing. I do what I can to make sure it doesn't happen but I think of it has not all that different then swimming lessons when we are asked to dunk them under the water. Now off to google dry drowning as I too have never heard of it.

I have never heard of dry drowning either but ds is constantly trying to stand up in the bath now. We use an inflatable duck bath but I think it's days are numbered. ::::runs off to google dry drowning::: Eta- posted too soon

  • I was a lifeguard and they taught us all about dry drowning and it scares the crap out of me too! DH doesn't understand my fears which scares me even more but so far we haven't had any issues. Don't beat yourself up though!!! It'll probably happen to all of us at sometime!!!
  • @huzzahuzza DH doesn't understand my fears either, which made me even more nervous!!

  • I have never heard of this until this post. I'm so confused - we put G under multiple times at swim lessons. Sometimes he gets some up his nose and coughs. Now I'm nervous.
  • I didn't mean to cause concern to anyone! I don't know much about Dry drowning except what I have read. I'm a paranoid FTM so anything negative that I read I remember which sucks and I tend to drive myself crazy about it. I was just wondering if anyone else had experience with their child going under water for a brief moment to reassure me that she will be ok. She seems happily sleeping in her crib moving all over the place like normal. I just have a horrible habit of googling since I was pregnant.

    I appreciate everyones reassurance though!!

Dry drowning usually happens when there's a near drowning experience , so water has been inhaled, and more than to make your kiddo cough and sputter a couple of times. The reason they call it dry drowning is because the kiddo appears to be ok.... they might cough a lot more but appear to be fine. Then they go home and a couple hours later drown because they still have too much water in their lungs.
  • Thanks Huzza. OP, if it is reassuring to you then, he goes underwater all the time, and while he's learning what to do on cue, we still catch him by surprise sometimes, so I can't imagine it's much different than slipping underwater in the tub for a moment.

I'm a big worrier too, so I understand that. I have sworn off google almost completely since the newborn days when I drove myself crazy.

C has gone under twice but I was right there, so I immediately grabbed him. He was a little shocked but never cried. I'm always right there.

  • R has gone under a few times. We get him up right away. We haven't had a problem. Dry drowning is when the baby has been under the water for long enough to really inhale water. Just going under for a second or two will not be enough to get that amount of water in their lungs. My sister was a college swimmer and a life guard forever. When she had her kids she did infant swim classes and explained the risks for the parents. Also, the lethargy and discolored skin would be obvious. All babies will go under at some point. If you're right there to catch them than the worst that will happen is that they'll be a little startled.
  • The infant bath we purchased is meant to be used until she is a toddler (I think up to 3 years old/hitting the weight capacity.)  We put it in the big tub.  She only stands when we are at someone else's house and has to be in the tub without her seat.  It's been great to help with that.  The problem we have is she wants to eat her bath toys and puts her head down near the water to get to them.

  • Thanks for the reassurance ladies!! I was right there and got her as soon as it happened. I watched her most of the night and she was fine this morning, besides waking up an hour earlier and having a tooth almost ready to cut through!

With summer coming up I know I have to get used to her experimenting with water and being in it. It still freaks me out though. I may sign up for infant swim class to mentally prepare myself lol.

Those of you who have enrolled your babies in swim classes , How do you feel about it ? Do you feel more secure with having your baby in water now?

  • I'm jealous of you ladies who get to go to swim class. Us tube mamas are scared of the water for completely different reasons. R loves the water and to splash. DH and I freak out that he'll get water in his ears and lose a tube
  • @beaubecca - just a suggestion if you're worried about how hot your water gets... You can install (or adjust) a scald guard on your hot water heater. It will prevent water from getting too hot.

  • I usually get in the bath with the baby because it is so much easier to reach and control him while also letting him play with his toys

Tube babies were the hardest to teach in swimming lessons because even after the tubes were out they didn't want to dunk their heads. They eventually came around though. I even had one that went onto the swim team!
  • DD has gone under before and I don even put much water in the tub. I never leave her unattended and it still happened. Don't beat yourself up.

  • My LO is big on putting his face into the water...he has already choked once I am not sure why he keeps doing it, but yeah, all around. bath time is kind of getting me on high alert.

I deliberately get water over Vs face and let her sputter a little to get used to it. She actually loves it and likes to dunk her face in the water.

So does C. He bends over and puts his face in on purpose.

  • i don't care if he puts his face in...its the whole water up the nose drama that ensues in a tiny slippery tub.

  • I want to get the ducky tub how long do you think they will be able to go in it before its too small? Is it worth it still to buy one?

  • I love the swim lessons OP. I was nervous at first, but now I'm very comfortable with him in the water with me. And now that I think about it, I'm more relaxed at bath time too. He loves the pool too. It's totally worth the money for us.
  • I put water over her face too , to get her used to it. Its just the whole ingesting a massive amount of water and it filling her lungs thing that freaks me out. Its been almost 24 hours and she is fine and I am just bat shit crazy that is all.

We are signing up for swim lessons to save my sanity , even tho I'll probably loose it when infant pools and beach days come to play in a few months.

V is pretty tall and I think she still has some time in it. Plus it was under $10.
Definitely want to buy the ducky tub now! Best thing is it deflates so its small to store for the next one.

Is your LO very movile (pulling up crawling, etc)? I'm not sure N would stay in it.
