STMs - how are you cleaning your Medela pump?

My Medela PIS took a beating for the 16 months that DD nursed (I pumped while at work). I can only imagine that there's a delightful mixture of mold and dog hair in it somewhere... Of course I am getting all new tubes, etc., but in terms of the pump machinery itself, should I be cleaning anything?

  • I'm wondering the same thing. I was thinking of just getting a new one for $50 from my insurance company rather than cleaning and buying new parts (plus then I'd have two coolers, two ice packs, extra bottles etc).

I want to say I saw a place where they will "inspect" your pump or something like that to check the motor and everything. I'll probably look into that more!

ETA: I just searched again for this and the one place that did inspections near me closed!  There are a couple places in larger cities (boutique-like bf'ing supply places) that will inspect and clean breast pumps though.

Maybe I'll call Medela and ask them!  They have always had really helpful support!

  • I need to look into it. I'm planning on buying all new parts (tubing, valves, etc) but I'm not sure if there is something I could do for the insides.

With my PISA I was able to remove the front plate and do a visual inspection of the inside to see if anything had been contaminated.  It's not a closed system, but unless you saw visible evidence of milk going up the tubes, it's really unlikely anything got in there.

When I talked to the Medela person, she said that getting new tubes wasn't really necessary if you took care of them properly (unless you have years between kids because the plastic can age and get less suction).  She recommended running rubbing alcohol down the tubes before storing them to clear them out, and then again before using them.  So that's what I did.

I used my PISA exclusively when pumping for DS1, but rented a hospital grade one for DD.  I liked that one so much better, I'm hoping to do the same thing, and just use the PISA for when I'm out and about.

  • I bought my PISA used, and just replaced the tubing, etc (provided free by the LC in the hospital!). I never had milk in the tubes, but would get condensation sometimes. I did the rubbing alcohol thing, but since it'll be almost 2 years since I last used it, I'll probably replace everything again this time.
  • Just found this on YouTube. It seems pretty easy to clean. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6x4CKzGmnMs
