3rd Trimester

Braxton Hicks

Just a quick question.

For the past 2 weeks or so, every once and a while I will get this very hard tightening sensation from about my belly button down.  Not painful, but just uncomfortable and tight.  Are these what Braxton Hicks are called?

Also, do they have the same rules as true labor pains do?  If I am having 4 within an hour should I go get checked out, or are BH normal to come and go many times during an hour?

TIA!

Re: Braxton Hicks

  • Basically what PP said. I was told to drink water and try to change positions/walk. That should help if BH. If you aren't able to walk through them and they become more painful then to call.

  • BHs are not labor pains, so first before calling any doctor or going to the hospital, you'll want to just try to get rid of them.  If you can change position or rehydrate and they go away after a few minutes, then it's nothing to be concerned about or call about. You will probably have ALOT of BHs over the next several weeks. You aren't going to want to call every time.
  • Braxton hicks is essentially fake contractions. I started getting them at 15 weeks, but VERY sporadically. The rule of thumb is no more than 4 per hour.  When I got more than 2 in an hour, I would lay on my left side, and drink water. It was always because I wasn't staying hydrated like I should. Dehydration will bring them on for sure, and I ended up in the ER this pregnancy because of it. Braxton hicks aren't bad, just keep an eye on your body. Wouldn't wanna go into preterm labor.
