Moms of 1+ : Water breaking & quick delivery question

I went into labor on my own with my first, and once my water was broken, around 4-5 cm, I quickly went to ten (like 5 minutes) and pushed him out within 15 minutes. With my second, I was induced to avoid going into labor at home because there was insane road construction preventing me from being sure I could assess my child if I went into labor AND just getting to our hospital, so I was induced 3 days early & it was a fine experience, but I'm curious, This time, I'm hoping to actually be able to tell when I'm in labor rather than being as unsure as I was the first time, but I'm totally horrified that if my water broke at home, I'd be sent right into the second part of labor, at home, alone,,,well,,,with my 2 kids.. For those of you whose water did break at home, did any of you deliver very quickly after? I feel like my first labor was as big of a trick as my angel son has been compared to my rascal daughter so I'm hoping to start labor on my own this last time, and my only fear would be panicking if my water broke at home. Fearing that I'd have no time to get out the door! Is it even possible to delver that quickly after if it breaks on its own ?(like I said, my first water was broken at the hospital, not naturally, so I have no idea if it's even possible that it break if I weren't already pretty deep into labor which in that case I'd be to the hospital already) ..? So! Has anyone delivered very quickly after water breaking? Sorry so long & confusingly worded!

Re: Moms of 1+ : Water breaking & quick delivery question

  • My water broke and 23 hours DS was born. My water breaking didn't start my contractions. I was 1/2cm when I arrived at the hospital and needed pitocin to start labor.

  • With my son, my water broke at home, and then I immediately went into labor and could have delivered in about 4 hours, had I not gotten the epidural. (I had no desire to deliver without an epidural, and also "labored down" when I went to 10cm, so I could mentally process what was happening to me.) So, my first delivery was a total of 6 hours from sleeping in bed, to delivery.

When my water broke, it wasn't a huge gush, like I was expecting either. Just about a quarter size, and I questioned if it was my water, or if I peed. It def. was my water, b/c the contractions started shortly afterwards and kept building in intensity. So, that was my first baby, and I know that subsequent babies generally come a lot faster. I'm worried about that for myself, too, with this one.

  • With DD my water broke at home at 1am. Things got intense, painful .& crazy quickly. I got to my birthing center (about 5 mins away) & by 5am she was here. That was Oct. 2011.

With DS it broke at home & 10 hours (& an epideral later vs. no meds with DD) later he was here.

    It's all a grab bag.

  • Both times my water broke at home, but unlike you, I had long labors: 48+ hrs until DD arrived and 14 hrs until DS arrived after my water broke.

Exactly my fear!!! Thanks ladies for your stories,,, I live about an hour away from my hospital & even with a plan, if my husband isn't home,,,I'm afraid it could happen here! I like hearing others stories:)

  • Water broke with our 3rd…nothing going on even once we got to hospital and we live 50 minutes away…got checked in and all that good stuff and still nothing really going on so they let me walk the halls before doing anything else and I was able to get labor actively going that way.  Once that happened…it was only maybe 4 hours until she was born.

  • I went from 5 cm to having her within 20 minutes or so.
The Dr. told me to make sure that when I have more children to let them know, so that they can prepare for a fast delivery.
It kinda freaks me out a little, because I live 1.5 hours away from the hospital.  I may go to my parent's house for the last few weeks, since they live closer.

  • My water broke at home. Took a couple hours to get consistent contractions going- I ended up with pitocin because the contractions slowed down. DD was born about 18 hrs after my water broke, after pitocin, epidural, episiotomy, and vacuum assist.

I walked around at 4 cms for 3 weeks. I never really felt the contractions.

My water broke naturally at 11:30 pm, the contractions came on hard then, and she was in my arms by 4 am.
  • My sister in laws water broke on the way to the hospital (20 min drive) and baby was starting to crown when they walked in. Baby was out in 15 mins after arrival.

With her first she had preeclampsia and was already there but once induced even 2 weeks early her labor only was about 3 hrs total.
  • My water broke with no contractions the first time; about 12 hours later contractions were lasting less than a minute and still at least 10 minutes apart, so I got induced.  Laboured for about 3 hours or so, and there she was!

It really is different for everyone.  Try to stay calm and listen to your body :)

  • My water broke on its own with #1 and he was born 1 hour later. My 2nd son was born 20 minutes after my water broke without any contractions beforehand. I was induced with my 3rd son bc of how fast my labors were. He was born 35 mins after the midwife broke my water. I will be induced on Monday with my 4th son bc it is very likely I will have a short labor again. I understand your concern about not making to the hospital on time!

My water broke at home at 2 am with my DD, but it still took 26 hours to deliver her. So I dont think water breaking is correlated with when you deliver.

Though, of course, with a third one, delivery could be fairly quick. Hope things work out!!

  • I had an amniotic fluid leak and definitely knew to go to L&D although it wasn't a dramatic water break like in the movies. I needed to get my contractions going and dilation started though so had pitocin and about 12 hours later the docs really broke my water with a huge gush. Didn't start pushing til about 8 hours later...failure to descend and c-section.
