Spoiled Milk

We accidentally fed LO some bad BM yesterday, I feel awful about it. :( I was gone for a couple hours, and when I got home DH was just finishing a bottle (of pumped milk, previously frozen), but Simon was crying through it. Simon had rejected (or tried to reject but eventually took) a bottle last weekend as well, and we figured it was because he is EBF. Well, after we tried to put him down for a nap, I took a sip from the bit left in his bottle because I have been curious about how it tastes.....and it almost made me puke! I had tasted drops of BM before, so I knew that was not normal...I smelled the milk, and it was rancid. Ugh...LO drank almost 3oz of it! No wonder he was crying! DH feels awful, and now we wonder if the bottle last weekend was bad too (he has successfully taken bottles before, so we had wondered why the sudden rejection).

I feel like such a bad mom. :( I didn't understand why the milk was so nasty as I had just taken it from the freezer friday night and it had been in the fridge since then. After a little research, I found out that you are supposed to use it within 24 hours of thawing. :(

No real point to this post other than to get this off my chest...and perhaps someone else can learn from my mistake. We will certainly be smelling/tasting all milk from now on!! Fortunately other than being rather cranky last night, Simon seems to be ok...no puking or anything. His 2 month appt is tomorrow, so of course I will ask the pedi to be sure. My poor little guy. :(

Re: Spoiled Milk

  • Did it actually taste rancid or more soapy/metallic? If it was the latter, it might be a issue of high lipase in your milk. Lipase is an enzyme present in all breastmilk that breaks down the fat; when you have high lipase it breaks down the fat faster and gives that soapy taste. It's totally harmless, it just tastes king of gross. If your kid won't drink it, you can scald the milk right after pumping, and it stops the taste from turning soapy.

  • Previously frozen milk will taste and smell different, doesn't mean its actually spoiled. Some people have to mix fresh in with frozen for their babies to drink it. To make you feel better, when Andrew was about 15 mo old and on whole milk he started not wanting to drink much for a couple days and having diarrhea, I assumes he didn't feel well until I realized the milk that I had just bought and had been giving him was already bad. Our grocery store is massive and insanely busy so I never even thought to check the date on it. I felt sooooo bad!

  • Yeah, I know about Lipase. I thought that's what it was originally, but the smell/taste was so strong that I almost threw up. It was definitely metallic-y, but I can't imagine it being ok to drink, so I assumed that it must have gone bad. I went ahead and scalded the pumped milk I had in the fridge just in case, and we will be keeping a close eye on pumped milk from now on!

  • My pumped milk after being in the fridge for a day smells really soapy but I've read it's to be expected! I'm sorry that happened to you, don't beat yourself up about it too much, everyone makes mistakes!!
