post on showers board got me thinking

there was a post about BYOG (bring your own gown) for labor and delivery.

What are you planning on wearing while you labor?

With DS I had on a hospital gown.  I thought it was huge and annoying the whole time.  This time around I plan on wearing a sleep-nursing bra and that's it.  If I need to walk the halls then I'll put something on the bottom and a robe.

Re: post on showers board got me thinking

  • I think I'll try and wear their gown. But I'm going to have a back up just in case I don't like it. Maybe a shirt that fits me at the time and then like you said if I want to walk around I'll have something to put on in that case. I'm to big chested (32 FF) right now as it is to wear a bra like that.

  • I'm planning to wear their gown -- but I'm also planning to bring a tank-top in case it drives me crazy -- then I can just use some sort of drape on the bottom. I'm planning to bring a robe for walking the halls.
  • I also wore the thing the hospital gave me and I'm not sure if thats the way I'm going to go.  At that point I really didn't care what I was wearing and although these "gowns" were cute, they arn't going to look as pretty once everything is pushed and done. I would be afraid to buy something cute and it get ruined in the process of birth.  I will have a robe to walk the halls (in case that is an option).
  • Are they going to make me wear the gown? I mean, if I come prepared with something comfortable that I'd rather wear, wouldn't that be fine? I guess I just figure hospitals have lame rules and they're not going to let me do things that I want, like eat sunchips. lol

  • hi guys, I know I'm still in 1st try but I just wanted to comment on this. I work in L/D and we require moms to strip down to nothing but their socks (if they want to keep them on) and OUR hospital gown. That way if something happens where we have to go back for a crash c/s we aren't having to fiddle with your bras, night gowns, etc.

I would recommend before buying anything checking with the hospital you are delivering at and seeing what their policies are. Just a heads up!

after I posted this I went on my hospital website to see if I could find any info on this.  Nothing.  Looks like one more thing to ask OB when I talk to him about my birth plan.

Thanks for the heads up. I know nothing is on my hospital website about this so I guess I need to go to their orientation class next month and that'll answer it. Only thing I will wear a bra because if I don't I will have HORRIBLE back pain (I may be in back labor any ways, who knows?) If it must be wireless then so be it.

  • Well, I'm HOPING to labor at least for a while in a birthing tub if one is available, if not I'm just jumping into the bathtub. So for that I'll just wear a sleep bra or something.

    If I'm out I'll wear a gown.

  • I'm planning on a waterbirth so I'm thinking that I will end up with a black babydoll style tank top. I've also see some videos where the moms wore bathing suits - bikini tops and swim skirts so I am thinking about that too. Will most likely bring a comfortable dress/muumuu too.

  • I think I'll definitely wear the gown for labor, but for afterwards have my own pajamas for nursing and such.
  • The whole theory of "you must do this JUST IN CASE XYZ happens" drives me insane. I'm an ER nurse, and I can cut a full outfit, including jeans, undies, bra, and shirt off of a trauma pt in less than a minute. I figure, be comfortable and if something that bad happens that I need to have a crash c/s, feel free to cut my clothes off.
  • With Dd, I brought my own pj's but I wore the hospital get up just for the first day.
