~*~ Toddler Check-in ~*~

I missed the last one, so sorry! Life with a toddler really is tremendously different than life with a baby... it's strange to think now that I used to find that exhausting. This is a whole new level :P

Any milestones this week? Funny stories? Challenges? Other stuff?

And a little mama-centric question this week... if/when you find time to relax, what do you do to unwind?

Re: ~*~ Toddler Check-in ~*~

  • Heya, mamas. We're doing okay here, just trying to get through this AWFUL winter! Getting more snow and ice today and I'm going bananas. Every chance DD has had to get outside she's been SO reluctant to come inside, and every time I take her out of her car seat she wants to wander the driveway and the yard before going in the house... no more being carried in quickly out of the cold!

DD recently started signing "please," and she picked it up pretty quick. I still have to remind her to ask nicely, of course, but there isn't anything she won't do for another banana or a piece of bread.

I also saw her stack seven blocks today, and got way more excited than I should have. Her tower fell over when she tried to go for the eighth block, but still. She is my tiny engineer.

I tend to relax after DD goes to bed, if I can, with a book or Netflix or an RPG game  - lately I've been playing SW:TOR, a Star Wars online game - and I just finished watching the second season of Call the Midwife on Netflix. I need more, it's SO GOOD.

Omg I love that show! I zipped through the run on Netflix in like two weeks lol They really need to get the next season on there! We cut our cable cord a while ago, so no BBC America for me :(

  • Yes, life with a toddler is very busy! DD and I were both sick this week, but we're finally getting healthy again. Now DH is sick, ugh... man colds... Since nobody was feeling well, I let DD watch way more tv than I normally do. Today we were back to normal and it was like he was going through tv withdrawal. Every five minuets she was pointing at the tv asking to watch it, and every time I said "no, not right now, we'll watch it later", she melted down. Actually, everything I said or did today warranted a meltdown. "Where's your sippy?" Meltdown... "Could I have the spoon back, please?" Meltdown... "Please pick up the book that you threw." Meltdown... The terrible two's get better, right?? Please tell me it gets better!!

Anyway, on to the good stuff! DD has been doing really good with colors and shapes. She knows orange, black, blue, pink, and purple. And heart, circle, triangle, and star. She's also doing good with animals and their noises.

I relax during nap time with a good cup of coffee and a book, usually. Then after DD's in bed, I watch tv with a nice glass of wine.

Hi everyone!! We are also suffering this endless winter too. I am so ready to take the kids outside for walks and exploring. DD now has three fully grown teeth in the front and the last front tooth is starting to come down from the top. This has caused nursing to become uncomfortable and sometimes painful. Her teeth rub against my nipple and even after reading the tips on Kellymom, half of the time it is still uncomfortable. Plus, she unlatches by taking her head away really fast with my nipple still in her mouth. I am piling on the lanolin. I don't recall this being a major issue with DS before and I am hoping once that last front tooth grows out completely, it will help her readjust the way she nurses. My mom irked me by asking if it was time to wean. No!!

My "mommy break" is a long hot bath with...umm...yes, my phone. My book is on there, plus games.

edited several times due to annoying autocorrect!

  • Hello, mommas.  I am so, so sick of the winter.  It is shaping up to be another crappy week and and out of the house.

Our DS is sick with a "rebound" cold (barely got rid of one and now another) and he is very sensitive, tentative, winhy and clingy.  Potty training is basically out the window for the time being.  We on the weekends and the nanny during the week has hands full trying to keep DS from melting down and handling DD, who we think is starting teething (otherwise we don't know the reason for her sudden constant spitting up and poor sleep).

So no milestones except more meltdowns and regression.  Challenges as noted above.

Not much in the way of funny stories.  Seriously.  There is very little funny going on in the tundra.

DH and I are supposed to go to a formal event fundraiser on Saturday night for a work client, and I don't know how we are going to be able to go.  Nevermind that I have nothing to wear (I tried on every nice thing I own...and decided to donate it all to Goodwill since none of it is close to fitting probably ever again) with DS sick and in this mood and DD a bit of a mess I don't think my parents could handle them for bedtime...and we don't have another sitter.  Crap.

And a little mama-centric question this week... if/when you find time to relax, what do you do to unwind?
Ben said "mama" FINALLY!!! I even got it on video!! I was so happy I cried! :D He is also officially clapping along with and dancing to music! He's been clapping for a while, but hadn't combined it with dancing before. It is SO cute! Our choir was warming up before service yesterday and Ben was sitting with DH, but had a clear sight line to me in the choir loft. As we were singing, he was dancing around and clapping- and he had almost the whole choir laughing instead of singing, including our choir director. He is such a ham!

His 7th tooth just broke through, so I am hoping this means the end to the crappy sleep and clinginess that has plagued us the last week or so. He has also been waking up for the day around 530-6 for the last 3 days, which is absolutely killing me. He normally wakes up around 730. Nothing has changed in his routine, so I'm hoping it's teething related and will go back to normal. Getting up so early is also messing with his naptimes and basically throwing off his whole schedule.

Nothing else is really going on. I, too, am sick of winter, and ever so grateful that the most recent storm trended south and we only got like an inch of snow, instead of the 8"- 14" they were predicting! I can't wait to get more outside time. I feel so bad for Ben. He has all this energy and is cooped up in the house. I want to go play outside with my son!

When Ben is asleep, I like to relax on the couch either watching TV, reading, or playing with my phone. Preferably with a nice cold beer, or a glass of red wine. However, a pint of ice cream works well for me, too! ;)

  • No, really, really this time I want to join the check in! Here's the scoop: C will be 12 months tomorrow and as silly as it sounds, I feel bad posting on the toddler check in and not the infant check in, like I'm playing favorites or something? silly right? Well, I guess as of tomorrow I'll have two toddlers <3, although Wes is encroaching into the pre-schooler zone...

Cal Milestones: 12 months old tomorrow! I could just cry with joy that 12 months has past since she made me a mommy again and Wes a big brother :) She started saying "uh-ooooo" when she drops her cup (intentional) or falls over, so her words are mama, dada, baba and uh-oooo, she also started waving and clapping last week.
    Happy birthday, little C!

  • I'm starting to get a little worried about her speech. She uses "dada" correctly for DH about 75% of the time, but also says it to other things. But no other words. She clearly communicates- if she is hungry she either goes and shakes her high chair while saying "dat!" or gets a bib out of the drawer and brings it to me. And her receptive language is awesome, she can go and get just about anything I ask her, or put things in to a bucket, etc. But I worry that she has no other words yet. I know she is only 14.5 months, but still...I worry.

I totally understand the worry, DD was the exact same way. Everything was "da! da!". I asked our pedi about it at her 15m app and she said they don't get concerned about it until 18m. DD didn't start saying any actual words until about a week shy of 18 months. From then on, though, her verbal has exploded. She picks up new words every day and is totally making up for lost time.

I know it's hard not to worry, but your DD still has lots of time. Receptive language does come first, and the fact that she's telling you what she wants and needs in her own way is a great sign. She will get there.

  • Any milestones this week? Funny stories? Challenges? Other stuff?

Milestones: I guess you could say he had some today.  Like taking an interest in doing one of those screws with a screwdriver on a kiddie work bench...or perhaps climbing up a stepstool and getting into a pan I'd left on the stove (it was completely cooled, no worries).  He turned 29 months this past week as well.  Oh and he followed a 2 step command the other day and has been doing a lot better with doing what he's told since then.  Yay!

Funny stories: Just little things like his antics today with the climbing...or him 'helping' me with his sisters blanket (read: yarn was all over the livingroom like a spiderweb)

Challenges: The usual speech and autism related ones with him.  Trying to focus on the fact that he's making improvements and, overall, has a pretty decent interest in those around him.

And a little mama-centric question this week... if/when you find time to relax, what do you do to unwind?

I'm a bath girl.  Especially being so pregnant, a bath is both my escape and my pain relief, lol.
