Will follicle still grow after trigger shot?? UPDATE: Triggering tonight!

edited March 2014 in Trouble TTC
So I went in for another follie scan today. I have one that is 20mm, and the other is 16mm. The doctor I spoke with at the clinic today said that they would like to wait to see the one on the right side get a little bigger before I trigger (They like them to be 18mm or bigger). You can see my follicle size progression in my siggy. He also said that if my blood work from today shows I'm starting to surge, then they will call and tell me to trigger tonight. Basically I'll be waiting by the phone for the rest of the day, while trying to get some sleep since I'm working the graveyard shift tonight :P. My question is, if I do have to trigger tonight, will the 16mm follicle still grow, or will it stay the size it is? And if it does stay the same size, is it still considered mature?

Thanks girls :)

Update: They called and we're triggering tonight with IUI tomorrow and Tuesday. It's soo weird doing it today since it is exactly 2 years since the day I m/c'd.

Re: Will follicle still grow after trigger shot?? UPDATE: Triggering tonight!

  • Yes, they can grow and mature after the trigger. For my IVF cycle, we triggered when I had five follicles in the 16-20 mm range but they retrieved 12 eggs and 9 were mature/fertilized so some of them caught up to where they needed to be.

Don't worry if they tell you to trigger tonight without waiting for the 16. As far as I understand, it's more important to trigger when the lead follicle is ready than to wait for others to catch up (since it might not happen anyway). Maybe IUI is different though.

  • They will continue to grow 1-3mm a day for the 36 hours from the time you trigger to the time they ovulate.  So really it's 48 hours from your appointment this morning.  So the 20mm can be anywhere from 22-26mm and the 16mm will be anywhere from 18mm to 22mm.  And even if growth for some odd reason stalled, my RE told me anything over 15mm always has the potential of being mature and ovulating (which is why if for example you have 5 follies before an IUI that are above 15mm they would consider canceling).

    Good luck with your IUI!

    Thanks ladies :)

I'm hoping we have two targets for DH's swimmers. Gives us twice the chance of a BFP (well in my mind anyway). I did the trigger an hour ago. I found it a lot harder to do then I was expecting. It didn't hurt or anything, just actually doing it was nerve-racking! I've poked myself with a needle before but this was different for sure.
