Pregnant after a Loss

Ultrasound yesterday, not good.

Doc called on my lunch. Said the radiologist found that the embryo was a little misshapen and sitting a little high. Also that they don't see a fetus yet just a gestational sac... But they said it's pretty early. I'm pretty disheartened right now... I go back in 7 days for another ultrasound. Anyone have these concerns and everything turned out okay??? Thanks ladies....

  • So sorry you're going through this!  Just want to clarify, though... an embryo turns into a fetus at 9 weeks. I'm not quite clear on what you mean by the embryo was misshapen but there was only a gestational sac? If there was an embryo, then there wasn't just a gestational sac.
  • I dunno, just what the doctor said. Maybe i misheard her but either way whatever she was saying wasn't good news... I guess what she said was they only saw the bare minimum but not everything they would like to have seen...

  • How far along should you be? Very early ultrasounds can be inconclusive.

they measured me at 5w3d .. I thought I was somewhere in the 6th week based on my last period. I told them that I am unsure of my last period exact dates though. I just know it ended on the 21st but the start date could have been anywhere between the 14th and the 17th, I told them the 14th just since 7 days is a normal period or whatever.
My mom says the same thing though Sweetiepops.. IM trying to keep that in mind. My mom LOATHS that they do early U/S and scare women into thinking everything is wrong when its so hard to really tell.
  • I know it's hard to wait (I had to do that last time)- but try not to jump the gun on such an early ultrasound. I had an ultrasound last week due to some cramping (my doctor wanted to make sure it wasn't ectopic- but she cringed at doing it before I was 7 weeks because she didn't want it to be inconclusive)- I should have been 6 weeks, but they said I was measuring between 5 and 6, didn't give me an exact measurement. The doctor said not to worry, and to repeat it at 7 weeks as planned. I repeated it yesterday and saw a beautiful hb :) So try to hang on! Best of luck!

  • oh, and I believe they just saw the sac last week. doctor said it was too early to have seen a hb.

They requested I had the early ultra sound because I was spotting. After my last MC I was PRAYING I wouldn't have to see the doctor until much later... but.... spotting...
Trust me I HATE that I even listened to the doctor.... I really just want to go back next week to make sure its at least growing..

  • Early ultrasounds can be very inconclusive and misleading because there ate so many changes going on that one or two days can make a big difference and scare you into thinking something is wrong, when its possible that dates are off. Good luck on your next ultrasound! That should be able to tell you more. (((Hugs)))

  • Thank you, I do really wish they hadn't done an ultrasound. I asked they not tell me anything but they said they legally have too... Which is dumb. I am spotting theresat858 so that they were ruling out ectopic. I asked that they not really look for anything else but they have to do the same things for every ultrasound. Stupid rules, I wish I hadn't mentioned the spotting. After my last M/C I know that if they aren't gonna stick.... they aren't gonna stick.

Try not to worry too much. I know is easier said than done, but sometimes the doctors are wrong, and early ultrasounds are not that reliable. I am hoping that next week everything goes well and you get to see a hb. Hugs.

They didn't see anything, just the gestational sac. No fetal pole or anything. Even at 6w4d, they had to do a transvag ultrasound, and it took the tech like 10 minutes just to find it, and it was only because she saw the flicker finally, and it was way over on the side. She had to hold the probe all the way against my leg, and it was actually really painful.

Thank you, in trying to stay positive and think that it was just too soon to really see what was going on.
  • Like others say, it's very, very early yet. And a lot is hard to tell this early.

  • I had one at 5w and change with DD (we're talking 3y ago now), and all I remember seeing was a gestation sac. Like you said, they whole point that early was to rule out eptopic, I don't recall mention of a yolk sac, and certainly no fetal pole. I can't imagine it would be easy to say how it is shaped that early either since the u/s barely shows a blob.

FX the week flies and things are looking up for your next check.

  • Thank you everyone. And as far as it sitting high that's just what they said, I presume closer to the Fallopian tubes then usual but they did say it doesn't look ectopic and it should drop. I know it's early, and they didn't say anything except that the misshapen sac could mean missed abortion. I know it's early, but I'm spotting so it's so hard to just forget about it :/. But thank you for encouraging words, I'm a pretty pessimistic person sometimes.
  • I had an early ultrasound (6 weeks) where they said the gestational sac was mis-shapen.  My sac ended up splitting into 2 (still only one baby).  But it FREAKED me out!  I think early ultrasounds are awesome and the worst thing ever at the same time.
