Painful engorgement

Hi ladies. I've been EBF my first LO, DD is 12 weeks. She just started sleeping 9-10 hours at night about 4 days ago and not waking for a MOTN feeding. Previous to that she had been waking once a night. When she gets up she has only wanted to eat off one side, i think bc I've been so full, and I've just been feeding her off the right side since that one feels more engorged in the AM. I also just started back to work this past Thursday, pumping 3x a day. By that first pump my left side is super full, I pump a little longer on that side to even out. Is that okay? My real concern has been the past 2 mornings my right side is super engorged by like 3 or 4 am, hard as a rock and super painful. It was so bad this morning that I had to pump it a little to kill some of the pain. LO actually ate from both sides this AM and I feel better, but I'm not sure what to do going forward. I figured it would take some time for my body to regulate after her dropping that MOTN feeding but my right side has been so painful. I don't want to have to pump since that would just signal my body to keep producing right? I'm going to call my hospitals LC helpline tomorrow but I figured I'd ask for advice here too since I've loved reading this board since DD has been born. Any help would be great!! Thanks!

Re: Painful engorgement

  • Thanks! I did some hand expression the night before last for relief. It helped a bit but all day yesterday I just felt like my right side was overfull. I'll try it again and hope I regulate soon, it's just hard to know what's normal as a FTM so thanks!
