Intro and question

Hi All,

I have been lurking for a while and am finally ready to post. Following this board has been such a huge help and source of information for me.

My son was born in December at 31 weeks. My pregnancy was going really well and that day I was having BH contractions which turned into a really hard belly that just wouldn't soften. This seemed odd so I called the dr. they had me come into L&D for monitoring and I was having constant contractions. They weren't concerned at first and gave me IV fluids figuring I was just dehydrated. Cervix was closed FFN was negative but my platelettes were extremely low. After they sent me for an ultrasound the baby started to have heart rate drops and they told me to prepare for the fact that I would be having him that night.

After freaking out I got up to use the bathroom and there was a giant gush of blood. Turns out I had a complete placental abruption...5 minutes later and I was being prepped for an emergency c section. My son was born not breathing but after two attempts they were able to revive him. He was born 4 lbs 1 ounce. He had a 42 day NICU stay and we are both doing much better now!

My question is about growth spurts...did your preemies have them and were they at their adjusted age/actual age or somewhere in between?

    Welcome! My boys were all over the place with growth spurts, I honestly gave up on trying to figure it out. The clear signs for us were eating more and sleeping more for several days in a row.

    Welcome and congrats!

    I've had a heck of a time figuring out growth spurts! LO was born at 29w6d and they seem to be all over the place.

    My boys were born in Dec at 31wks as well. Baby A was 15in and Baby B was 17in. today they are 2mo actual. They just had their 2mo well baby check up today and they both grew a good amount. Baby A was 20in today and Baby B was 21in. They are still in the preemie growth chart for height but pedi said their growth was very good. DH and I notice that when they sleep and eat a lot more than the average day, that they are putting on weight or growing. By the looks of their progress today, we are on to something :) I hope this helps you.

    Steele just had a huge growth spurt. I came in one day and he had gained 100g in one day and just looked HUGE! They were convinced he would lose weight that night but false. He has always gained a little, then a lot..Knox on the other hand is mister slow and steady.. I wonder since they are identical if they will eventually grow at the sand pace.

    Welcome and congrats on your baby boy! I'm glad he seems to be doing well. As for growth spurts, my little guy was born at 32w3d at 4 lbs. 6 oz. I honestly could not tell that he had any growth spurts at all. He was and still is very little (21 lbs. at 16 mo. actual) even for adjusted age. He had terrible reflux and was not a good eater. I was very stressed out about his weight gain, but I had to let it go and accept he was going to be a smaller baby and kid. He's very healthy and has a great appetite these days.

     I'm not sure if you're dealing with this or not, but preemies can stay on the little side, which is ok!

    Thanks all! He is doing well with his weight gain. I was more curious about it because he has been more fussy lately and wanting to stay on the boob. Thinking maybe it was a growth spurt but who knows! I could spend all day trying to figure out what's going on with him and never come to an answer. Between his reflux, gas and me being a FTM I never know what it is!
