Mesh Crib Bumpers

My mom and I attended a women's health and lifestyles expo yesterday. From one of the booths I picked up a pamphlet that talked about SIDS. It showed a picture taken of a baby that died from strangulation from a mesh crib bumper. I am now have scars on my eyeballs and brain after seeing this picture! I know there was several posts about bumpers when we were all getting our nursery's ready regarding their safety and what everyone's plans were. From what I remember the majority were getting the breathable liners. As soon as morning is here I'm taking the mesh crib bumpers off and they are going back to bru! Ugh can't sleep after seeing that picture! He's safely sleeping in his pnp tonight.

  • Omg that is awful!

  • @sventurarn I want to bleach my eyes and wish I could unsee the picture. It also looked to be installed incorrectly. I feel just sick to my stomach!

  • How sad. I bought those for #1 and the second they were installed I ripped them off. They were surprisingly thick, and the way my crib is designed, the bumper had to be doubled over in places. Didn't look breathable at all. Sounds like that one was maybe too loose.

  • That's one of my biggest fears so I just went bumperless. Actually, the bedding I picked doesn't even have a coordinating bumper. I guess it's catching on.

  • No bumpers here at all!

  • Why the hell would they include a picture of that? I have bumpers but have taken them off now that LO sleeps in her crib. I never saw the point of the mesh ones either.

  • I had bumpers ( they are really common here in Brazil) but one day I found my baby's head too close to it.I thought since he was small (40 days) he wouldn't be able to move that much. I was soo freaked out that now we don't have anything in the crib! Thankfully nothing happen, but just the thought of it freaked me out!
  • How sad about that baby. And that's awful there was a pic! We have the breathable bumpers but I'm not worried about them at all to be honest. I made SURE it was installed correctly, & though it is doubled up in some places I put my own face against that part to test it, & I could breath just fine. LO moves a lot in her sleep & it makes me feel better that there's something there to prevent her head from being right on the crib slats. That said, I've seen her face in the bumper multiple times, so I'm definitely glad we got the breathable ones.

I've seen people use that rationale before and it bugs me. No one is worried about YOU suffocating in bed. The fact that you can breathe through it just doesn't matter. Those breathable bumpers, IMO, not safe.

  • Just for the record too the baby died of strangulation. He or she was all wrapped up in it like a fish in a net :(
