Crib confusion

I am clueless about what crib to buy! I have a book called baby bargains that has been a great resource but cribs I have liked, they haven't recommended. They say they chip and don't hold up well. Does anyone have a crib they love - somewhat reasonably priced? I can't rationalize spending >$600 on a crib?? I appreciate any suggestions!!

Re: Crib confusion

  • We have the Baby's Dream Cocoon series. It has lasted for 5+ years.

  • Most of the more expensive cribs are convertible though, so you get crib, toddler bed, and eventually a twin bed. Check customer reviews of the ones you like online, they might be more recent than the book you have, and modifications may have been made to resolve those issues.

We used a graco crib with DD. it held up well until we transitioned her to a big bed at 2.5. We will use it again for this LO. We had no plans to convert a crib so it was a perfect fit for us. I've also heard good things about the ikea cribs if you have a store near you.

  • We got the Da Vinci Jenny Lind style crib from amazon. It was $179 and I love it. It took 20 mins to put together. Whether a crib is $100 or $2500 it still has to meet all of the regulations so when you are paying extra you are either paying for a convertible, special type of wood, etc. Baby bargains is a great spot to identify good brands but the crib section is huge so I get your frustration! Good luck on your search!

We got whatever baby bargains said was best under the cheaper ones
I think it's something like graco lauren. Nothing fancy but we haven't had any issues with it and it didn't break the bank.

  • Basic safety standards are the same for all cribs. So any crib you buy will be safe for baby. What the book is talking about is how much wear and tear you can expect the crib to take from use... And in that respect- you get what you pay for most of the time.

If you want a very fancy looking crib at a low price, the materials won't be as high quality. They'll still be perfectly safe for use- but they might look more beat up after baby is done banging toys against the wood and gnawing on the rails. But all baby things get beat up during use.

If you want the crib to still look showroom ready years down the line- you're going to wind up paying more for higher quality materials. Harder woods, higher end varnishes, etc.

The sweet spot depends on what you want. It's a balance between looks, materials, and price. At a low price point you will probably have to compromise on either looks (go with Ikea cribs- sturdy but a little plain looking to some but very affordable) or materials.  If looks matter most- then you'll either have to compromise on materials or price.

At this point I'd probably go with the basic ikea crib- but we bought our crib many years ago and went with a much more expensive one. It's not bad, just a lot of money in one piece of furniture.

  • We got the babyletto modo crib in the two-tone look. Obviously we haven't used it but I love the look. We got it for $330 with free shipping.
  • We got a Convertable Simmons crib and it is absolutely beautiful. The construction is really solid, too.

It regularly sells for $299.99 but we nabbed it during their baby sale for $50 off.

  • We got the Davinci Emily. Seemed to have good reviews and converts to a toddler bed. It was affordable but I can't attest to its quality since this is #1. I just went by reviews online and baby bargains.

We have the same crib and have used it for three kids over the course of 5 1/2 years.  We just bought a second identical crib since the last two babies will be only about 18 months apart and DS will still need his for a bit.  You can't beat the price and I seriously don't have even one complaint about it.

  • DS sleeps in a Graco Stanton convertible crib that we got from Walmart for $149 in 2011. He turned 2 this past November and the crib is still in perfect shape.

I bought a Dream On Me convertible for this baby. Paid $89 for it around Christmas, also at Walmart.

Babies and toddlers are tough on furniture. I don't think expensive pieces are immune to kid damage. I do believe adults are motivated to take care of higher-end pieces because of the investment and the pride issue, but kids feel no such obligation. I'd much rather my child damage a <$150 bed than a $500 one.

For DS I got a Westwood brand set and it converted into a full size bed. He will literally be in that bed until he's off to college! The changing table converted to a dresser too. I got the same brand for this baby only with the toddler rail before going to full size, so once again it will be used forever. The furniture is great quality, solid. https://www.bambibaby.com/baby-furniture/furniture-brands/westwood-design?gclid=CIqGjN2n8rwCFTDxOgod5ywAtw# ETA: added link. We have the Meadowdale and Waverly sets.

  • We were originally registered for the Graco Sarah (that's the one Baby Bargains recommends) but we had some shipping issues with BRU and ended up looking elsewhere. We got the Davinci Kalani from Amazon and love it.

  • We have the Babyletto Hudson in the two tone. I love the look and it's not made of particle board wood. Solid pine. Took DH 30 min to put together. We bought on Amazon for $379 and got a $50 credit towards their baby store. Obviously haven't used it yet, but it looks good.

  • I also love the DaVinci Jenny lind crib. Awesome price, nontoxic finish, and has a cute vintage look.
  • We bought a Bonavita Peyton Classic in white- solid wood, not particle board and a classic design. We love it. It retails for $350.
  • We got the Baby Cache Heritage Convertible for just under $500. It's really pretty and sturdy. I'd recommend.
  • To me, a crib is a crib. I didn't research any. My MIL just knew the style and color I wanted and picked one out from Target. Mine is convertible but I don't think I'll be using it that way. By the time this LO is old enough for a bigger bed, we will hopefully have our second on the way.
  • We bought Graco Lauren for my DS in 2010. It held up fine and will be using it with this baby with a new mattress. DS still uses his mattress in his Thomas bed.
