Breastfeeding

so frustrated!

So I posted a few days ago bc my 2.5 week old wants to nurse all day. Thanks to everyone who responded to my post, I now think LO is going through a growth spirt!

But... I'm frustrated bc he will be really hungry and will not get anything (he wont make swallowing sounds) and it will frustrate him. Then ill get frustrated too...

He will get really upset and im not sure what to do. I can hear his stomach rumbling but I dont seem to be able to feed him enough bc he is constantly nursing. My breasts never feel full anymore.

Do I have a supply issue? If not, what do I do to calm him down so he can nurse? When he gets frustrated he shakes his head and wont latch... or worse, he will latch but will tug on me and it HURTS!

TIA!

Re: so frustrated!

  • I agree that not feeling full is probably because your supply hasn't quite adjusted to baby's increased demands.  As frustrating as it is for both of you, keep nursing.  I bet anything it will all be better in a few days.

I agree with PPs that you want to stay hydrated and well nourished.  I always drink a glass of water at each BF'ing session to replace what baby took out! Also try to stay as stress free as you can.  That can slow letdown.

As far as baby's frustration at letdown not happening fast enough, maybe try nursing somewhere new to calm you both down.  Your bed.  The bathtub.  In front of a good movie.

If you are still having issue and/or are still concerned that you might have low supply in a few days, definitely look into a weighed feeding.  You don't have to go to a LC if you don't have easy access to one.  See if there's a BF'ing support group at a local hospital.  Or even see if your pedi or the hospital you delivered at will let you use their scale.  All you do is change baby's diaper.  Weigh him/her in just the diaper.  Nurse baby.  Weigh baby in that same diaper (do not change before the 2nd weight even if baby poops or pees).  The difference between the two weights is the amount baby drank.  My memory of what's normal at 2-3 weeks is a bit fuzzy, but I want to say somewhere in the 1-2 oz range is good at that age.

Keep up the good work mama!

  • Anytime I feel like I'm not feeling confident about my milk supply I eat a bowl of oatmeal and drink some water and I can defiantly feel a difference :)

    good luck!
