Organic baby mattress?

I know I still have 2 baby mattresses from when DD was a baby, however I fear they may be in my grandfather's garage. ( I used to live there). If they are, I don't feel comfortable using a mattress that has been outside in a garage for 4 or 5 years. If it was wrapped up that would be one thing, but I'm pretty sure not. Am I being paranoid? I just feel like all sorts of nasty dust and bugs would be in there.

Anyway, if I do end up buying a new mattress, does anyone have an organic rec that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? I don't have $2-300 to shell out for a mattress that will be used for 2 years. Or can I just get an organic pad and put it over the mattress? TIA!

We ended up getting a Moonlight Slumbers Little Dreamers mattress. Way less expensive than most organic mattresses, although still pretty pricy compared to a conventional one, but after reading their website, we felt that this was the best compromise between our concerns about off gassing and our budget

And I don't think an organic mattress pad would protect your baby from the off gassing from a conventional mattress. Oh, and I too would be concerned about mold in the mattresses stored out in the garage.

Haven't even registered yet I'm a FTM. However I was just doing a lot of research on mattresses yesterday. I found the Colgate Eco Classica and the Sealy Spring Free Sowbean & Latex Foam Core Crib on amazon after seeing them else where amazon has great reviews for them. Hope that helps!

There are food-grade plastic wraps (more than a cover--think of a giant ziplock bag) you can get to cover an out gassing mattress, but they're noisy. Even so, I would definitely cover the old one or shell out for an organic one. Dust mites and mold in the old one are definitely not healthy for baby. Or anyone!
