Doulas for Natural Birth

For those of you who have attempted a natural birth (or are considering one), have you hired a doula? If so, how did you find yours? Locator sites like doulamatch or word-of-mouth? Is there a "marketplace" within "the bump" that advertises doulas?

Thanks!

Re: Doulas for Natural Birth

  • Haven't done this yet, but my area has meet the doulas events and I've gone twice. Once last pregnancy (didnt end up hiring one) and once already this pregnancy. It's a great time to get to meet a bunch at once. There's one at the end of March right by my house that I'm trying to convince DH to go to, but he isn't sold on the doula thing yet and wants to wait till our Bradley classes are underway before deciding to get one. It's driving me nuts! Especially since I have a pretty good idea of who I'd like to hire already!

I googled doulas in my area and found several. They had personal websites and were listed on DONA.org. I set up meetings with a couple of them just to chat and see how their personalities were. The doula I choose was the one that my H and i meshed well with. She was very open to our needs (we wanted a doula to help my H help me) and to provide a strong positive support when labor was tough. The doula we choose was great. She made our birth an amazing experience. She never overstepped my H but when I needed the extra support or my H kind of zoned out because he did not know what to do she stepped in. It was the best money we spent.
Like the PP mentioned several doulas in my area do a doula meet and greet every other month. About 5 of them get together one evening and expecting moms can meet with them and ask questions. Its a great way to meet several at one time to see who works well for you.
  • Definitely looking online is a great place to start. I am a doula and we also do the local doula meet-ups which help us find clients. As PPs mentioned, interview a few and find one who you click with - that's the most important thing.

I truly believe that hiring a doula is the #1 best thing you can do to ensure a satisfying birth experience!!! Good luck!
