Waterproof Mattress Pad Question

What kind of mattress pad does everyone plan on putting on their bed in the event of your water breaking while you sleep?  I'm not sure what direction to go with it.
TIA!

None. I think I put a towel down on top of my sheet last time.

  • I never thought of this - thank you for posting!
  • I'm thinking of getting one from Target - the ones that are supposed to protect the mattress but don't have a weird crinkly sound. I'm not worried about my water breaking in bed, I'm more worried that the baby will pee or poo on the bed and it will get all over our new memory foam mattress.

  • I bought a vinyl cover from Walmart for under $10 and it's on my bed now. Doesn't hurt to put something down.
  • Not sure but something. We have a tempurpedic and I would hate for something to happen!!!
  • We have a protector on our bed anyhow because staining would void our warranty. It just looks like a fitted sheet but has a plastic backing under the top part.

  • My water broke while I was laying down with my first pregnancy. It wasn't enough to need anything. I had pants and underwear on and got up right away
  • I agree lol new mattress would be great
  • I thought this was going to be about crib matress pads. Ha.

  • On our bed I have one from Macy's that is allergen/bedbug/waterproof. With the dogs I wanted to make sure mattress is safe. I figure when I get closer I will just have a towel on the bed invade water breaks in bed.( Or in case I pee myself when I sneeze.)

I know the protector works because I have had doggie puke on it and no issues with it leaking through.

This. I didn't realize I was in the minority on this until the last time this was posted. Also, I eat & drink in bed & don't want my tempur-pedic to get nasty. Then there was a baby in our bed pooping & peeing all over the place & breastmilk letting down in the middle of the night. How am I in the minority of having a mattress protector?!

  • I got this one, it will go under our padded mattress pad which will absorb any liquids. I figure it will also be nice to protect against boob leakage, and messes from baby if he ends up in our bed in the mornings. https://www.amazon.com/LinenSpa®-Waterproof-Mattress-Protector-Eliminates-Warranty/dp/B00A2G9VFM/

I like this. If my water breaks in bed, it's just a sign I was supposed to buy a new mattress.

I have a matress pad, I just ment I wouldn't be going anything special to account for my water breaking. My kid peed my bed once. I used it as an excuse to buy an new matress pad. I don't think it's waterproof but neither was the other one and her diaper free pee in my bed did not touch the mattress.

This. I had time to try to run to the bathroom (thought I peed my pants) and it just got on my pants. Water breaking as a first sign of labor isn't rare, but the huge gush of all your fluids is. Usually it's just a trickle and you have time to get out of bed/off the couch because you think you're peeing!

  • My sister suggested puppy pads. Disposible and cheap!
  • Here in the UK we have these:

    https://www.boots.com/en/Boots-Maternity-Mats-1-x-5-Pack_924022/

I don't know if you can get them in the US, but i'll be picking up a pack. They don't cover the whole bed, so your partner doesn't have to feel like an incontinent old man by sleeping on them.

BTW i've slept on a plastic mattress protector in a hostel in Amsterdam. I just worry what had happened to prompt them to put the plastic protector on there in the first place. BLEEEUUUURRRGHH!!!!

haha, well, I for one don't eat or drink (other than water) in bed, nor did I ever have baby in our bed to be worried about peeing/pooping/etc.  I did BF, but rarely had a leaking problem.

And we do have a mattress pad on the bed, it's just not waterproof.

  • I am one whose labor began with my water breaking in the middle of the night in a huge, unexpected gush.  Somehow I was able to jump out of bed at lightning speed and avoided getting the mattress wet.  The floor was a different story.

This time around, especially since we just bought a fancy new mattress in December, I plan to put a towel or two under the sheets on my side of the bed starting around 35 weeks.  We also have a wool mattress pad on top, as required to keep our warranty.  The two together will hopefully contain the mess in the off chance that history repeats itself.
