Wooden train sets

Hi Ladies,

I also posted this on the working moms board.

DD's 2nd birthday is coming up and I wanted to get her a wooden train set.  There's a Kidkraft train set on sale on Zulily today.

I like that this set has other vehicles included in it (she LOVES cars, helicopters, and planes)

I'm wondering if anyone has this set.  Do you like it?  Can you add other pieces to it from other brands?  I want to get something that will last and that she will enjoy for years.  I would like to be able to get a set that is compatible with other tracks and trains.

Thanks Ladies!

That set looks awesome! DS has played with one very similar every time we go to the toy store and I have to drag him away from it. Very good quality and easy to move the trains around. I also like that it has other vehicles. I'm sure that's a big hit with kids.

DS has a Thomas train set that is motorized. He likes it a lot but I would love to get him a wooden one.

Thanks for your input.  She loves trains.  She does have a battery operated one that she's not too crazy about but when we are at her cousin's house she loves to play with their train sets and move them herself which is why I thought something like a wooden set would be better for her.

  • That set looks pretty cool. I also really like the wooden Thomas set. I bought it for my first nephew and have added track pieces and trains over various holidays and birthdays. It survived him and his younger brother and now my sister's twins will be able to play with it as well. Definitely worth the money!

  • Years ago we bought our DS the KidKraft lights and sound wooden track.  LOVED IT- loved that it was wooden and a few tracks when ran across would make sounds.  Over the years we have expanded with Thomas, Brio, Chuggington, generics from Walmart/Target and even homemade stuff we found.  However, with regard to the KidKraft cars we found that their magnets were not very strong and didn't hold together well.  It wasn't just our set, my friend got KidKraft and the same thing.  It may not seem like a big deal but it frustrated my kids a lot that they wouldn't hold very well.
  • DS loves Thomas but Thomas train sets are expensive. We bought brio train track which is compatible with thomas wodden railway.
  • we had a generic wooden train tracks that we used with Thomas the Train that the kids really enjoyed. It was a little difficult to set up sometimes, but we got it together pretty well that they were able to enjoy it.  They got an Imaginarium train table for Christmas.  It was about $100 and come with tons of stuff, and was still compatible with the Thomas Trains.  They enjoyed it for about 5-10 minutes before they discovered throwing the tracks all over was even more fun.  DH glued them down with Gorilla Glue and now they really enjoy it.  If you have the space and you think she'd really be into it I'd get a train table, but glue down the tracks.
