Sippy Cup Fail

Hi Moms. My DD is 13 mos and she's still on the bottle. It's not that she refuses to take liquid from other sources - she just doesn't understand! She can't work a straw (she chews it, breathes into it and giggles), and she can't work the stopper in a sippy cup. She tilts the cup up,breathes into the end, gets frustrated that nothing comes out and throws it down. When I remove the stopper, she tips and drinks once, throws the cup to the side (spill) or chews the handle (spill). So, the only way I can get her to take several oz at a time is with a bottle, but the pediatrician keeps telling me to get her off asap. She understands commands and stuff so I don't know why she doesn't get this. Any advice?

Re: Sippy Cup Fail

  • I have the same problem, sort of.  She has always loved sippy cups and grabs them and drinks--but she can drink for a long time and there seems to be no noticeable decline in liquid.  Since she gets constipated if she doesn't have enough fluids, we are not going to give up bottles.  Although it spills a little, we have modified the tops so more comes out, which helps some.  Also, when I was having some grape gatorade (I'm pregnant) she wanted some, and she can drink sort of successfully out of an open top with help, so she had some...and we discovered she is an addict...so putting some of this into a sippy encourages her to drink more.

  • just keep at it. My DD definitely chewed and played with the straws on sippys. She gravitated towards the softer silicone straw in the Zoli cup..so that's what we used. It wasn't something she instantly took to or got.
  • When we first offered a sippy cup, I had to remove the valve initially so DS can tell that water comes out. It took at least a week or 2 before he really figured out how to use one (but he was only 7m then).

With the straw cup, he really had no trouble drinking from it at all (I think we started around 13m).  We started with a Munchkin one that is silicone with a valve.  Now he mostly uses the hard plastic straw from the Take and Toss.  If you haven't tried the T&T, I'd suggest you give it a try.

The only thing that DS still gets confused is when to tip the cup and when NOT to tip the cup.  We let him drink from an open cup sometimes (he's no longer using sippy cups), so he tends to tip them when he's using a straw cup.

  • Mine can only figure out the "bite" kind. Nuby and munchkin both make one, munchkin is better, IMO. He can't do the straw ones or the hard plastic suck ones. It took him awhile to get the hang of cups but I just offered it every day.

Try a nuk soft spout kind. Its like a bottle, but shaped like a spout and has handles. It really helped DD make the transition.

  • We used a Platex straw one. I think it is called Little Grippers or Little Sippers. It is a straw cup that lets you squeeze it to force the liquid up the straw. We started by squeezing a little bit in his mouth and then squeezed it to just the very top of the straw as he started to suck a little. We just slowly squeezed less and less as he sucked more. It took us a couple months to learn how to use the sippy cup, but he never would take a bottle so the whole concept of drinking from a vessel was a new one.
  • I second the straw cup that you can squeeze to get liquid out. It let us show him that milk comes out of it. Then he started slurping up what we squeezed to the top. Then in no time he was sucking out of the straw. And once they get it they don't forget how. We've been using only straws since 11 months

  • If she makes a big mess practice during bath time, or practice with just water in the cup instead of milk so it doesn't matter if it spills everywhere. It takes a while for them to figure it out.
