Chard vs Kale

Which do you prefer?

all the books recommend kale, but it is not the only dark green leafy vegetable out there

keep in mind Chard comes in RAINBOW

Re: Chard vs Kale

  • I made chard tonight with olive oil garlic  - it was colorful and delicious
  • I eat more kale but I actually prefer chard.  I put kale in smoothies but the texture is a little tough for me.  Chard is more delicate and has a better taste.

  • Chard! Way better for juicing and in strata with Italian sausage! But kale chips are amazing.

  • Chard is of the spinach family - kale is cabbage/broccoli family

I love spinach, most raw but i hate cabbage is all forms - even bok choy in spice garlic sauce (only way i can eat broccoli). I can do some kale. (I have family members that are allergic to the cabbage family of foods)

Chard cooked is far taster than cooked spinach, plus it can be reheated
  • We eat a ton of spinach and kale. I never think to buy chard.

  • Kale for kale chips.

Chard for smoothies. Blended kale is gritty. Blended chard is smooth.

  • Chard! Though DH hates all leafy greens so I usually just stick to baby kale in salads. I also have started buying Lacinato kale when I do--it's more tender than curly kale.

  • I buy the same kind of kale, @Irishcurls, when I can find it (only 2 places here carry it and they're both "specialty" grocery stores). I really dislike curly kale, in all forms. But the Lacinato type is pretty good, I just had it in a braised chicken dish.

Normally though, I'm all for the chard! Sauteed with a little olive oil and balsamic vinegar and garlic. MmmMm.

I totally understand the fear of bugs in kale. I always soak my veggies when I bring them home and that seems to help. I just fill the sink with cold water and add like 1 cup of vinegar to the water. Soak the veggies/fruits for up to an hour and then rinse them off. I have never had any issue with the veggies tasting like vinegar and I've never had any issue with bugs/etc.

  • I could live off of kale chips (if they didn't make me so farty).
Do you make them homemade? If so, how long do they keep? I make mine homemade, but I swear they are always gone in an hour...

  • that is why kale is so farty - collard greens and arugula are cabbage too
  • Personally I prefer kale because I gave myself food poisoning from a chard dish once. Not chard's fault, but still. Also, chardbodies:

  • Omg that was hilarious! Chardbodies! LOFL
  • Personally? Ew vs. Gross.

But on a more serious note I feel like kale has become so big it's bordering on a 'trendy' food. They're both good for you and are a healthy choice, so try out recipes with each and see what YOU like. If it comes down to it, chose chard because it's pretty; Points for presentation!!

i got ecoli (ended up in the hospital for 3 days) from unwashed organic driscol raspberries - it was years before i was comfortable eating them again. I still won't eat sprouts - most common ecoli food

    Chardbodies are awesome
