would you cook this chicken?

this is a dumb question but I am so frustrated right now... I decided to try one of those preassembled dinner places to try to make weeknights easier but feel like I am feeding something better than takeout and processed frozen stuff on days when I don't have time or ingredients to cook...I picked up 2 meals that were frozen yesterday and we ate one last night and I had the chicken for the 2nd one on hte counter in the evening hoping to get it just a little more thawed before putting it in the fridge so it would hopefully be thawed for tonight's dinner....
MH 'shut down' the downstairs before coming up b/c I was dealing w/ the kids going to bed and a child who wouldn't go to bed, etc. I came down this morning (about 8-9 hrs later) and find the chicken still on the counter. UGHHHHh!!!! He never checks the counters nad cleans up anything, just shuts off all the lights w/ out looking and I don't go double check everything when we're ready to go to bed...

SO long story but would you put the chicken in the fridge and cook it for dinner? It is chicken breasts and they were frozen solid when we went to bed. I know I should just toss them but I was trying so hard to make my life easier for once and now have to toss the $ and the time and have nothing to make for dinner argh :(.

Re: would you cook this chicken?

  • Were they thawed out? Then no, I would toss them. If they were still cold and partially frozen, then I'd still use them.

  • Yes thawed but still cool
  • Since it was thawed I would probably toss it (which I hate doing).

If it makes you feel better my DH does the same thing.  He usually stays up later than me and will leave meat out on the counter overnight when I've forgotten to put it in the fridge.

  • It must be a common DH thing. Mine left the milk out on the counter yesterday morning (luckily I noticed it and put it back in the fridge) and leftovers out all last night which will be getting tossed today.

If it makes you feel better, I bought a whole chicken last weekend and ended up not cooking it. Since it was in the fridge all week and happened to not have a sticker with the sell by date on it, I tossed it. Kept kicking myself for not putting it in the freezer when I bought it.

  • DH did this with a lasagna I made not too long ago. It was supposed to last us 3 nights and we had to toss it out after 1. I was SO MAD. He tried to be all - "well you didn't put it up either". Um no. You know darn well I bathed the baby, put him to bed and then got into bed myself b/c I wasn't feeling well. All while you were in the kitchen washing dishes and then watching TV. Why in the HELL would I get up after you came to bed to make sure you put the lasagna away after you were done cleaning the kitchen?

Sorry, I just know how you feel.

  • I hope you tossed it. Chicken left on the counter for 8 hours = food borne illness waiting to happen. Gross. Signed, former restaurant inspector.

  • I'd toss it too. And be totally pissed about it. So frustrating!

  • LO I did toss it but cursed it the whole time. If it were just me I would have eaten it but never want to risk it w the kids....
  • I'd toss it. I don't like to chance these things. And, if I did try to eat it, I wouldn't enjoy it because I'd be concerned the whole time! We throw out a ton of food because we don't cook it fast enough. I hate it.
  • I guess it's amazing no one in my house has died.  We defrost stuff on the counter all the time.  It takes 3 days to defrost a package of chicken breast in our fridge.
