Crib Mattress????

Ladies.. HELP ME!!! Seriously, why are there so many mattresses to choose from?! I keep searching online and I always think I've found THE ONE only to read reviews and see that it wasn't a great buy. I'm looking at names like Sealy and Serta, names I'm familiar with for regular mattresses, so you'd think I could come across a nice one. I was looking to spend like $100-150. Is that not enough?? Tell me what you guys are buying!!!!

Re: Crib Mattress????

  • I took to the internet today while overwhelmed at BRU. It lead me to Amazon, with the mattress with the best reviews, an also the least expensive. I checked it out and it met every standard- all for $53. Seems ridiculously cheap but hey, go with the masses.

  • I just spent almost 2 hours at the local BRU in mattresses this last weekend. I ended up choosing a Simmons. Originally it was $179.99 but everything was 15% off. I have nothing to offer other than what I spent and brand. I really struggled with this decision...
  • I used the Sealy Soybean off amazon with my son and was happy with it. Re-using it this time around. It's light weight enough to change the sheets easily, but also firm. It's less than $100.
  • Focus on firm and a snug fit in the crib. For some it being organic matters.

Also, BRU is good for scoping out items, but is often a rip off for buying them there. I test stuff out there, then buy elsewhere, like Amazon.

  • We got this one for DD and will be buying another one for this LO. It is extra firm (as recommended for SIDS prevention) but pretty light, which makes it really easy to change sheets.

  • Got ours at target it's organic and emissions free from Simmons it was 119 :)

  • We went with this one from Amazon. It was recommended on baby bargains and has the extra firm side for infants. Expensive but hoping we can get use if we are lucky enough to have more kiddos

We registered for one of the 2-in-1 mattresses at BRU. I don't even know what it's called and I'm mobile (read: lazy) but I don't think it was too expensive.

ETA we plan on buying it ourself, but we're putting everything on the registry for the completion coupon.

Pretty sure this is the one we have but we got it from BRU. I know it's Simmons Kids and a 2 n 1.

OP: It's a mattress. As long as it's snug in the crib (which standard ones are) it's fine.
  • Also I can hardly tell a difference between the infant side and the toddler side. Both are very firm.
  • I got the safety 1st one from amazon, I think it was $52.99? It came today and seems to be pretty good quality. Obviously time will tell!

We now have 2 of those. They're great and honestly she wouldn't know the difference between that and $200 mattress.
I am a little angry I paid $52 for this one and got the last one for $30.

  • We ordered this one from amazon https://www.amazon.com/Sealy-Soybean-Foam-Core-Crib-Mattress/dp/B001N4LE5M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1393571753&sr=8-1&keywords=sealy+soybean+foam-core+crib+mattress

I was able to carry by myself upstairs to our nursery last week (still in the box), and put it into our crib.  It's light weight enough that changing the bedding will be super easy, is super snug inside our crib, and VERY firm on both sides.
  • We got the sealy soybean foam core mattress, too! I relied heavily on "baby bargains" when picking out everything for our sweet girl, and the mattress was rated well in the book. It was over $100 at BRU, but we got it for about $85 on Amazon. It fits the crib well and is really lightweight! Good luck on your quest :)
  • We ended up registering for and receiving this one from our in-laws (shout out to their incredible generosity-- they also bought all the furniture). I am a FTM and can't vouch for really anything, but we were hoping to just get a 2 in 1 and not spend a fortune. The lady at BRU also suggested if going with coils that the mattress should have at a minimum 180 coils. This one had 183... Crib Mattress

  • @Kimbus22 LOL! Driving myself insane about it is exactly what I'm doing! You guys are right, I am being crazy. I just assumed I'd buy a crib mattress, then I go to buy one and it's like hey wait, lady, there are 20 million choices. It overwhelmed me! And from what it sounds like from you guys I don't need to go much above $100. Thanks for talking me off the ledge. Maybe now we can all pray that my poor baby doesn't turn out as neurotic as me..
  • We bought a serta organic on sale from amazon for $129, like more than half off.  Keep searching for the deals.

  • I have read (somewhere I don't remember where in all of the volumes of stuff there is to find), that re-using an old crib mattress increases the risk of SIDS.  We threw out our old one and bought a new memory foam for this baby.  Was that an incredible waste of money, or has anyone else run across this?
  • I remember being overwhelmed last time about this and my sister just told me to go for a mid-priced mattress.  The one we bought then was maybe $150 and has worked out fine.  We bought a new one for this baby, it was $99 on sale for $59.  So I guess you could say I bought mine based on price, but it has worked out for me.

Reading the reviews was a joke to me.  So many people claiming that buying a particular mattress helped their baby STTN.  Maybe its true for a small number, but if that's the trick to babies STTN I have the wrong mattress.

  • The baby bargains book was SUPER HELPFUL for us. There were so many things I didn't know about baby mattresses! They are not like shopping for an adult mattress. They have to fit your crib very snugly, must be very firm, waterproofing, and check the sides too. A firm mattress with sides that aren't supported and collapse significantly when pressed down is a SIDS issue.

Top rated brands are: Colgate, kolcraft, lullaby earth, moonlight slumber, naturepedic, sopora.

Lowest rated brands are: Simmons & la baby
  • I got this one as well! Reviews are great....price good....winning!

I read that and it gave me the nerves.  When we were going to switch to toddler bed I was going to buy a new crib mattress because of it.  But now that we have 2 cribs it's moot point.

  • Mine were shower gifts from a family member (I am guessing they were in the $50-75 range), but I did buy one for my niece two years ago.  I spent about $70 on her mattress and she is still using it now with no problems or complaints.

This is the one DD has in her crib. We went with Simmons because all our mattresses are beautyrests and we've been super happy with them. DD seems to like it. When we switched her from the cosleeper to the crib in her own room she dropped all of her night feedings and started sleeping 12hours. Obviously it probably has nothing to do with the mattress but she must be comfortable on it.

  • Twilight Ultra Firm

My older sister who is also pregnant bought this one and suggested it to me.  So we're getting that one.  Has good reviews and is a decent price.
  • We went with a brand we knew. It was between a Sealy and a Serta Diamond. They were almost identical except for the fact that the Serta has a hypo-allergenic layer of something. I have horrific allergies and figure that if my kid inherits this crap from me the least I can do is buy her an allergy-friendly mattress.

Even if it's just a sales gimmick, it worked. We ended up paying $250 but used a 20% coupon at BBB.
  • I spent $36 on DS's mattress in 2011. It's still in great shape nearly 3 years later and was never used without a waterproof cover, so I'm passing it on to DD. I've since upgraded DS to this inner-spring mattress (also crib-size, for infants and toddlers) for $39.

Never in a million years would I spend more than $50 for an infant or toddler mattress. I've seen no evidence that it's necessary.

  • I also went with the Sealy Soybean since it was highly rated in Baby Bargains and online, and was very on sale at Amazon.

  • I also liked the sealy soybean foam core one woth DD and got another for this one since DD is still using hers. Super light for middle of the night sheet changes and firm. Also a high recommendation in the baby bargains book and good reviews. For some reason this is the one baby thing I was really obsessive about researching. Found it on walmart.com with free ship to store for around $85 I think.

I've read this as well, and while I can't find solid substantiation, I'm paranoid enough about SIDS that it's worth it to me to buy a new mattress.

  • I think I finally settled on the Colgate iii clsssica. As long as it's greenguard certified that's all that matters. I'm going to check out the sealy soybean since you guys have recommended that.

We bought ours at BBB awhile ago because we had a gift card but we read reviews online while in the store. IMO, the kid has been floating in fluids for a long time and doesn't have a preference for what to sleep on. It's not like LO has back problems etc etc. I figure the child will be grateful to be out of fluid
    <image>
  • I finally pulled the trigger. Bought one today during the BRU 15% off sale. I think I did you guys proud. I didn't go overboard. The mattress ended up being $90.
