Early Intervention

So I hope we didn't make a mistake.  The pediatrician mentioned we should have them come evaluate her when we met for our first appt.  Well, we read the pamphlet and weren't too concerned.  We went for her 6 month appt today (she's 4 months adjusted), and she isn't rolling over or crawling.  She can hold her head up.  The Pediatrician thinks she's on track, but I mentioned EI again. She's like "didn't we talk about this?" I said we had, but we didn't pursue it. She said it wasn't too late, so I just now called for a referral.

I hope we didn't make a mistake by not doing this sooner.

Re: Early Intervention

  • I wouldn't worry about it. The good news is, you're getting her evaluated. We didn't go through the process until they were about 9m (6m adj) -- and at that stage DD2 wouldn't do anything on her tummy, bear weight on her legs...nothing. And, she just barely qualified (our prior visit to her neonatologists said her gross motor skills were at the 2-3m level -- the EI qualification bar was higher than I expected).

That said, our pedi goes on and on about how a supportive, enriching, stable home is infinitely more valuable than actual intervention services. He's not opposed to those services, by any means, but says he's found that they don't add a ton of incremental change than the baby would have achieved without those services (and rather they provide the most value when coming into rougher environments for the baby -- single parent HHs, drug history, etc).

Now, I haven't seen studies or anything about this, and some of this he may just be saying to make me feel better, but he has gone out of his way during both of our most recent appointments to get on this same soapbox. So, for what's it's worth, don't feel like waiting a couple of months is a major issue -- and that your LO is going to be at some major disadvantage for having not acted sooner. She won't be. ;)

  • Thanks ladies! They're supposed to contact me in 5 days to setup an appt.

As for her crawling, I honestly have no idea when kids are supposed to do what :) And then factor in chronological age and adjusted age and I confuse myself lol

    My Wonder Woman!

  • My twins get EI services. One twin rolled over at 6 months actual( 4 months adjusted). The other hasn't yet and they are 7 months actual now. Neither the occupational therapist or the pediatrician seem concerned about it. My full term older son only rolled at 6 mos and crawled much later... Definitely worth it to pursue services though.. If she doesn't need it, great, but then you won't be always guessing..at least that's how we felt about it...
    DS#1 born 9/23/06
Twins DS#2 and 3 born at 31 weeks, 3 days due to a short cervix on 8/2/13.
  • Visit any of the BMBs and you'll see it's normal to put off rolling until 8 or 9 months, and some kids skip crawling all together. There is such a wide range and so much depends on baby's personality. That said, an evaluation won't hurt anyone!

Our Angel Patricia born sleeping 3/30/12 at 31 weeks
Our Fighter Anna born early 1/8/13 at 26 weeks
Hoping to bring home #3 due 9/9/15
  • We opted not to use EI at this point. LO is 7mos actual/4.5 adjusted and pedi doesn't seem concerned. There are some milestones she's hitting at actual age, ahead of schedule and some still lagging maybe, but it's so hard to tell with preemies.

Our pedi is a mom of preemies too, so I trust her judgment. I think well wait on EI if/when she thinks it's necessary and then she can refer us.
