TTC after 35

How to go about this…...

So Hubby had his Dr. appt. a couple days ago to follow up on an ongoing problem he had been having ( he was undergoing tests and all sorts of awful procedures to make sure he did not have colon cancer after they ruled out diverticulitis…talk about stressful!) Turns out he has a partial hernia. Ugh! poor hubby.
Anyway so last month I told him when he went to his follow up to mention to his Dr. that we were TTC and to get a lab slip to have his swimmers tested. Im a lamo and forgot his appt was (so I could remind him) but yeah for hubby he remembered! (this makes me think he wants babies more than he lets on)
Dr. doesn't think he is the problem but gives him the slip since he is the first thing to logically test since its the easiest right?

Nope not gonna be so easy. He has to go drop off specimen at a location within 30 min….but location is an hour away with no collection rooms. Oiy!

Vent over.

Re: How to go about this…...

  • I hope your husband is feeling better!

Sadly, the only solutions that come to my mind involve en route collection and sound like unfortunate jokes ("but, Officer, I have a doctor's note!") So, no help here. :(

The logistics problem has to be a common one, though.  What did the doctor/collection facility suggest?

  • Bathroom at the collection facility.  Or park in a secluded place nearby (deserted parking lot, rest area in the woods, etc.) and just do it in the car.  My husband had to do the 'bathroom at the facility' route for one of his specimen collections, he said it wasn't so bad.

    All ALers welcome!

  • @Davie813 He is feeling better thank you. Actually they were able to diagnose him because there was no inflamation and he was not in any pain this week. Dr was able to tell by physical examination. We are going to opt not to do surgery at the moment since Dr. says its likely to just stay the same…….its just gonna be painful from time to time. He's a tough cookie.

We haven't asked about suggestions on how to go about but I think @gscoville may be right…..facilities (if they have them)  or somewhere secluded nearby may just be what we have to do.

  • Sorry your DH has to deal w/ such a stressful and painful situation. Hope it gets resolved soon!

The first time we did DH's SA, he went into his office, did his thing, dropped it off me in the get away car. I RUSHED to the lab with the little guys in my coat pocket. We made it in time...but it was cooooold that day. Like 1 degree or something crazy. And the results were less than idea.

Second SA, DH took the morning off and went to the lab to get the cup. He said he went into the nearest bathroom and...ahem...did his thing then took it to the lab. No results yet, still waiting. But I'm hoping that since the specimen wasn't out in the cold like last time, we'll have better results.

The lab did say, if he does bring it in, keep it next to your body so they will stay at temperature. Too cold or too hot is bad for results!

Good luck to you and your DH!!

  • I can't believe there is no place for him to "deposit". That sucks :( When I would bring DH in the winter I would keep them inside my coat touching my skin, then I worried I was overheating them, its very stressful!
I hope everything works out ok though!

  • Funny, DH and I were just laughing about this last night. When he was making arrangements he told the scheduler he had a minimum half hour drive, in light traffic. She went into full-on problem-solving mode... suggesting that he pull over along the way, or in the running car in the garage. It was a bit of an awkward conversation.
Not having a vehicle with tinted windows, he was a little nervous about that solution, so fortunately he just left mid-day, drove fast and got there just in time. Then, as he handed the sample to a tech, the guy held it up, looked it over and loudly asked "what is this?" (And it gets more awkward!)

There is no way he could have used the facility bathroom... it was not in the best part of town, and the crowd in the waiting area was a little rough - he definitely didn't want to hang out there longer than required.

  • Hope your dh is feeling better. That SA situation sounds challenging. Crazy, it seems like a place like that should offer a space for that if they take it!
  • I agree with pp about it being strange that they not have a collection room. Well I hope it all works out.

  • Very strange indeed. @mindaa, I can't believe the clinic's actual advice was to pull over and take care of business somewhere along the way. That would NOT be an option where DH and I live.... :-S

  • See I think that is strange too!!!! Ugh such a pain!!! It does say on the paper to keep the sample cup close to the body on the way to the clinic…..to keep it near body temp. I guess we will figure it out! Just so weird to make it so inconvenient.
