I didn't realize that last episode was already the finale. This season seemed so short, I was waiting for it to pick up and it's just done. After such a long wait, it seemed so quick.
Don't we still have the Christmas special? I agree with PPs, this season flew by, and it seems like very little happened.
I may be the only person who feels this way, but I was relieved that they killed Matthew off. Their story line was just too boring once he and Mary settled down and were happy. I like Mary so much better this way--independent and able to choose what's best for her life, rather than having to worry about marrying for money and position.
I'll be honest, I can't really tell them apart...I'm terrible at their names and they look similar. But I liked the pig farm guy up until Mary found out he was set to inherit money and then her eyes flashed dollar signs.
Team Gillingham! Even if Charles Blake is an heir, I still don't like his attitude and just overall presence. Lord Gillingham is much more romantic and appealing! I wanted to scream at her when she turned down his proposal!!

She really isn't completely free to choose, though. She said herself that she has to think of George and do what's best for him and the Abbey since he's the heir (and she is, too, in a way since they found Matthew's will). To me that means that she still needs to think of money and status.
I think Rose's ball was the Christmas special (aired in the UK at Christmas time)
Shoot, I was afraid of that. I don't know--this season all just seemed like filler. As much as I love the show, Fellowes needs to step it up or put it out of its misery.

I agree with you to a point, but I guess my interpretation of that statement is that she needs to think about the estate itself. Before she married Matthew, she had a relatively limited inheritance because her family's wealth was tied to the estate; therefore, she needed to marry well to maintain the status and wealth to which she was accustomed. Now, regardless of her future marriage prospects, she is able to exert control over the estate on her son's behalf, and one would assume that he's not going to completely push her out when he fully inherits as an adult. I guess the way I view it, Mary will always have concerns and responsibilities tied to wealth and status, but at this point she does not have to actively seek it to ensure her future prosperity--she just has to maintain it for the next generation.
@joules235 I read that Julian Fellowes didn't want to kill off Matthew, but the actor wanted to leave the show. So sad!
Yes! He and Sybil both did - but Sybil was upfront about that at beginning. They have shorter contracts in England for TV shows (3 years vs. 7 years in the States) and the actor insisted on leaving by the end of the season - they really wanted to make his death the beginning of this season to not jam pack last season full of death and tragedy, but he refused. Psh. Isn't he thinking of the viewers?!
(The director and a few actors were interviewed on NPR - super interesting!)

What!! So that is why people die!? Lame! I feel like Sybil's storyline could have been so exciting. Having her die in childbirth was such a let down!!
------- I went to see Winter's Tale partly so I could see her in something again. I think she's amazing and her character in that movie definitely had some similarities to Sybil.
I miss Tom and Sybil's love story. This new chick trying to work her way in there needs to back off. No one will ever be good enough for Tom again!

OMG, I love Tom & Sybil so much it hurts. Best couple! (And he seems to actually sorta care about his kid sometime, unlike Mary...heh.)

I was just going to say this about the teacher lady...back off! Also Thomas is just SO EVIL. ALL THE TIME.
YES. Totally. Sarah Bunting is THE WORST and I wish she would just go away.
And I'm so over the regression of Thomas's character. His development was getting so good and interesting... and now he's just a one-dimensional schemer. Disappointed.
Anyway... I'm Team Blake. Gillingham's hotter, but he's so infatuated and pushy. I like that Blake challenges Mary.
I am all for Blake. I feel like Gillinggam is there soley for her inheritance and doesn't give a shit about saving Downton. I feel like Blake would help her succeed. I think she was always more drawn to Blake and did you see the excitement when she learned he is upper class as well. She wasn't very fond of Matthew from the start either but he grew on her and I want Blake to grow on her too.
Forgive the late comment. Finally had a chance to watch the finale.
I suspect Michael faked his death because his business is in trouble or something of that nature. Edith signed that document giving her control of the business without even reading it!
I heard they aren't even starting to film the next season until later this year. Torture!
Oh, and I'm Team Tony all the way. He's adorable and they have such great banter.
Re: Downton Spoiler: Who should Lady Mary choose
Related: I love Miss Baxter and Mr Mosley!

Ok, is that where they were going with that? Thanks!

Cheers to my fellow Downton Ladies.
