Biter at daycare

T has been bitten 3 times in the last week and a half at daycare. Today, I noticed the third while giving him a bath and they hadn't even told me about it. It looks like a shark bite. Seriously, I can see every tooth, top and bottom. And that had to be through his clothes too!

I was upset the first time it happened and I signed the incident report, irritated the second time I had to sign again, and this third time, I am pissed off. Especially because they didn't tell me. Maybe they didn't know it happened, but that possibility concerns me even more that his teachers wouldn't notice my kid crying!

I plan on talking to the director first thing in the morning but I feel sick knowing I have to drop off my son at daycare tomorrow and he could be hurt again, most likely by the same kid. What else would you do?

  • I don't have any advice. But I'm so sorry that he has been bitten so many times. That really sucks and I'd be pissed off too.

DD has only been bitten once, to my knowledge, at daycare. I would be really annoyed about three bites in such a short time, and I agree with you that it is very concerning if either they didn't notice her crying or didn't tell you. I would take a picture if you can, and definitely discuss it with the director.

  • I'm sorry you're DS is being bitten. As the mother of a child who was a biter I can promise you that mom is just as upset as you and also worried sick that her kid could be kicked out of the daycare. It sucks on both sides!

I actually agree with @ks3pink here. DS has been bitten once and was a biter on Monday, though I don't think he actually hurt anyone since we didn't have to sign anything.

That said, I totally understand where you're coming from. You need to find out from the director if it's just once person (they aren't going to tell you who) and if so, then you need to let them know that you expect that child to be shadowed.
  • I am so sorry your child got bitten. As a parent I would be extremely frustrated. However, I thought maybe I could share my perspective as a former toddler daycare teacher. Many, many toddlers are biters and I had so much anxiety when I had one in my classroom. It's hard for the director, the children, the teachers, the biter and the bitee. However, it's a pretty normal and common time in development and sometimes it's next to impossible to prevent. In my toddler classroom we had 10 children with 2 teachers. Sometimes we would have 2 or 3 biters at a time. We did our best to shadow these kids, but there are still 7 or 8 other kids that need diaper changes, fed, help with coats on to go outside, attention, etc. All I'm trying to say is that while I 100% get your frustration, it's unfortunately going to happen sometimes.
