Leggings under attack in OK

https://m.news9.com/story.aspx?story=24823291&catId=112032

Middle schoolers sent home for violating dress code by wearing leggings with tops that do not cover their bums. A "leggings are/are not pants" battle is brewing on Facebook.

Regardless of whether they are pants I think especially in middle school lines have to be drawn as to what's appropriate and not distracting for a bunch of hormonal Tweens and teens.

  • I agree. If I can tell from a block away whether you are wearing underwear- nope, not pants.

  • I teach in a middle school and our dress code policy is leggings are fine as long as the tops are long, so same as the school you referenced.

I am not uptight about clothes, but I have to agree. No need to be showing off the goods!

Usually if there's a dress code violation in our school the student gets sent to the office and they need to change their clothes - either their phys. ed clothes or they have to call home for some. I don't think it ever escalates to detention. Maybe if someone was a "frequent flier".

I watched the video and their shirts are definitely covering their asses. They just don't reach their fingertips, which is the school's rule. I think that rule is stupid. If it covers the ass, you're fine in my book.

Plus, super conservative rules like that are a little too close to slut shaming for my comfort. "My kid can't concentrate in class because you're dressed like a slutty mcslut!" Uh, your kid can't concentrate because he's a teen with a boner 24/7. Leggings aren't the problem.

Ehhh. I kind of agree but 90% of work places have dress codes also. Time and place and all that.
I think the fingertip rule is just an easy standard to enforce. Everyone has fingers and generally your arms are proportionate to your arms. Much easier to have a student put their hands at their sides and see if their fingers reach a hem than to bust out a ruler.

I get the slut shaming concern but we also had rules for guys about sagging pants, sleeveless shirts, holes in jeans (no holes above the knee etc).

I don't know about enforcing a dress code being slut shaming. I think lines just need to be drawn somewhere. Everyone will push it. Someone wears footless tights and tries to call them leggings while all of everything is on display, you know? And I went to an all girls school and our uniforms had to be a certain length. I don't think it had anything to do with hormonal teen boys, seeing as there weren't any there.

    Edit for spelling.

  • Coming from someone with long arms, the fingertip rule sucked. It meant that I couldn't wear pretty much any shorts made for girls in HS.

Sure, I just think covering ass is a perfectly fine rule. I don't see the need for fingertips. Those girls in the video were fully covered.
Well calling it slut shaming is extreme.
Eh, I just think it all comes from the same place. Why do they need to cover up to start with? Teen girl bodies! OMG! Hormones! It's right there in the OP - hormonal teens. I'm fine with some basic dress codes. I just think fingertips is unnecessary in this case.

Yes, the OP says it so it must be the reason.

Ha, I was just going to argue that it's not all about hormones and bodies when you reminded me that's what I said! From my memory of dress code, it wasn't all just about covering up girls' body parts, it was about encouraging and requiring kids to dress appropriately - no sagging pants with underwear sticking out the top, no visible bra straps, no profane or suggestive language on t-shirts, no big holes in jeans, no pajama pants, and so on. I think dress codes are used to address all sorts of behavior issues, one of which can be girls dressing with the goal of drawing lots of attention.

  • They have this rule at DD's high school. They aren't supposed to wear yoga pants either. The school doesn't seem to enforce either regularly.

  • The leggings are not pants people would have a real hard time in Brazil, seeing as how everyone here seems to think they are. Ladies will wear leggings with butt showing to work and school without a second thought. I do not do this BTW.
  • Soooo... If they have a fingertip length rule for tops, and were sent home for that, shouldn't the title be "moderately too short shirts under attack in OK"?

  • Leggings and yoga pants?  Meh.   My school needs a policy against white pants in winter and wearing jean shorts and work boots together.

  • I have no problem with dress codes and don't think they are slut shaming. Everybody has to follow it including boys. This is why every school needs uniforms.

Also I have long arms and tried to get away with short skirts to get the boy I liked to notice my awesome legs. No shame for me and it worked!
