To cut up food or not to cut up food?

DH is a very nervous dad. He gets it from his mother, the world's most nervous grandmother. We have differing opinions on a lot of areas such as blankets or no blankets, but the biggest area we disagree on is how small to cut up DD's food. At 6 months we started with BLW, but at the first sign of gagging, DH insisted we switch to purees. Ok, fine, I felt a little more comfortable with this at daycare anyway, so I didn't have a problem with it. Then at 9 months our pediatrician said we could start giving cut up table food, and to gradually increase the size of the pieces to see what she could handle. DD did awesome with that, but fast forward 4 months later and DH still insists on cutting everything into teeny tiny little pieces that you practically need tweezers to pick up. Clementines are cut up so small that all the juice runs out and you're just left with the skin (membrane?). Muffins are turned into a pile of crumbs. About a month ago I started giving DD a half piece of toast in the morning that she could hold in her hands and bite. She has never had any trouble with this, but if she takes a bite my husband thinks is too large, he will literally fly across the room and pull it out of her mouth. My thought is that without letting her experiment, she won't learn what a manageable size is.

Just curious, what is everybody else doing at this point? What size pieces, or are you not cutting up food at all anymore?

Thanks, ladies!

Re: To cut up food or not to cut up food?

  • I still cut up most but I've noticed she's really good at pulling things apart herself so I really don't have to.

But I will still be sure to cut up choking hazards like meat, grapes, large pieces of cheese, ect.

  • We have never cut her food up. She's been in normal, adult food since 6 months.

  • DS hates having food cut up now.  He likes to take bites from everything.  This morning he was stealing bites from my bagel.

  • I will cut things into strips for DS, but they're always big enough for him to grab and take bites from. It made me nervous at first, but he has learned his limits. Just yesterday he shoved a half a piece of toast into his mouth...then quickly pulled it right back out again. Maybe start with softer food and gradually increase their size until DH realizes that your LO can handle eating larger bites? Also, maybe he'll feel better when more teeth come in? My DH feels much better now that our DS has molars!

  • Thanks for all your responses, ladies! DD does have molars, so she should be able to handle most soft foods I think. I think I'm going to try strips like some of you mentioned and see if DH will go along with that.

    I appreciate all your input!

  • I try to cut everything into a size that involves her needing to chew a bit, but that isn't really too big to choke on. I try giving her bigger things but she just shoves it all in her mouth and it freaks me out too much.
  • I also cut up the food in small pieces. If I give it whole, she just shoves everything in her mouth and chokes.

  • DD won't eat her food if it looks different than ours, so most of her food is never cut unless ours needs to be too. The only things I always make sure to cut are foods with skins (or similar), like potatoes, grapes, hot dogs, etc. only because DD seems to still have some trouble biting through those at first.

My DH was the same way about cutting everything up into teeny tiny pieces at first, but it never made a difference with DD. She still managed to shove the same amount of food in her mouth, and then gag on it, regardless of how small it was cut. Once she figured her limits out on her own, she was fine eating food that wasn't cut.

  • We also did BLW since DD was about 5 months. I always cut things up, to some extent. We also give whole mandarin oranges, raspberries, any fruit or veggie that will break up. Strawberries i just pretty much quarter them, same with grapes. With toast or grilled cheese I just cut into triangles. Pizza I do strips. I make muffins in mini muffin tins a lot and she gets the whole thing, along with pasta salads. We have not had one choking episode yet (knock on wood) and she truthfully doesn't even chew her food lol.
