July 2013 Moms

crafty moms

Recommend your sewing machine! I'm linking for something moderately priced. I've been getting really into sewing lately and I really live it. Ice borrowed my moms machine. It is a very expensive digital Bernina machine. I can't afford it, but I'd like to get a middle if the road one because I do see myself using it quite a bit.

Any advice?

  • Yeah I should go play around with them. My moms machine is really awesome. I don't even know how to use all the settings but I'd like some time to sit there and learn. That's definitely not in my budget though and I don't need all the bells and whistles!

  • It can't recommend one since mine was pricy. But I have a Jamone 6600 memory craft. I love it since I quilt and it has a big hole to ease the fabric in through. My first one was $100 Brother that I got at Walmart. It was great. I just out grew it. But you could talk to the ladies at Joann's. They could point you in the right direction.

Singer ... Mine was my grandmothers and it's a beast. I absolutely love it :)

Old singers are awesome. My moms and aunts are awesome but I have a new one and they are so cheap. They just aren't made like they used to be.

  • I got a brother CS6000i (here). It's lightweight but oh so easy to use. I don't quilt, but I make baby clothes and baby blankets and such and for that it works perfectly.

  • You might see if you can find an older Singer, Bernina or Janome on eBay or Craigslist. My parents bought me a used Bernina--exactly the model I learned to sew on. It's not top of the line, but it's made well and I don't want the upgrades anyways.

  • I have my grandmother's Singer also. It's over 50 years old. A little maintenance very few years and it works great. The only thing that doesn't work anymore is the bobbin threader, so a couple of years ago I got a newer Singer. I figure they last....

  • I have a kenmore that is made by Singer. I love it.
  • My mom and I both use her Singer from the 70's (it's really cool; it has it's own case that snaps on).  Has been going strong for 40 years or so.... :)

  • I am also not much help. My sewing machine is pretty from the 70s. My mom is a big quilter (like plans her vacations around finding new quilt shops) and I agree with finding a local sewing/quilt shop. Those ladies (and men) are always super knowledgeable and would love to talk to you forever on which machine would be right for you.

  • I have the Singer Patchwork. It was an awesome Black Friday deal. Regularly $450 and I got it for $175 I think? It's been great.
  • I have a bernina i bought of my grandmother because it was too hitech for her. I love it. I have searched (embroider) machines on ebay and there are lots of great deals. Some people have multiple machines trying to get rid of it or they buy them and never use it because they cant figure it out.

  • I have a singer from Walmart. I wouldn't trade it for the world. It's super easy and does everything I need. Now my monogram machine on the other hand... That's a different story.
