Failed the GTT :( Advice please...

So just got a call from the doctors about my GTT, which I knew meant that it was not going to be good news. She said that one of the three tests were abnormal which they consider as saying I have gestational diabetes. I have an appointment to meet with a nutritionist on a little under 2 weeks. Anyone else with gestational diabetes have any suggestions? What should I be doing while I am waiting for the appointment with the nutritionist? Thanks!

  • I'm a newbie to the GD thing too and honestly, it's not that bad. Although my OB recommended I see an endocrinologist instead of a nutritionist. The endocrinologist got me in the next day (as soon as I said GD they jumped).

I have to check my blood sugar four times a day and log everything I eat. The biggest thing is seeing what triggers high blood sugar. I've already been able to figure out that juice (I LOVE apple juice so this makes me sad) makes me spike so now I'm avoiding it and sticking to water.

I was told that I didn't actually have to cut everything out of my diet, but rather space it out. For example, eat half a bagel for breakfast and the other half for a mid-morning snack.

It's really not that bad :)

  • This is my second GD pregnancy...it's not that bad once you get into a routine and get used to it.

The basics for me have been eating a balance of carbs (complex) and protein: breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack

I test 4 times a day: fasting and 2 hours after each meal. (testing intervals and target #s vary by practice)

It takes some time to figure out what your numbers can tolerate and what you have to cut out as your pregnancy progresses and your hormones mess with how your body processes glucose

I eat a lot of meat, cheese, peanut butter, hummus, nuts, veggies, beans, oatmeal, whole wheat (lower carb options) bread, cottage cheese, plain greek yogurt (with granola, berries, or a little honey)

I tend to do okay with my after meal blood sugars. Fasting sugars are my challenge and I did end up on a small dose of oral med before bed with DD. Neither of us had issues with our blood sugars after she was born.

You can probably search GD on TB and get some other meal/snack ideas.....April 2014 had a really long GD check-in thread last week with a lot of input from their GD ladies. the high risk board also gets a lot of diabetes related questions. good luck!

  • I agree with everything @chknma said and that is exactly the routine I follow, as this is my second time with GD.

Hang in there, I know it's not ideal, but it's really not difficult once you get into the routine.

  • My GD class is this Friday, but during my 2 week wait I just ate low carb and low/no sugar foods. I also made sure to add protein. Today I got my monitor, but of course the battery it came with doesn't work. That means I probably won't be able to check it until my class.

Good luck, and I'm always hearing about how the diet makes women feel better, so there's that!

  • I had GD my first pg. It was pretty easy once you got in a routine. Like pp said you just figured out what triggered it. As long as I stayed within my parameters for carbs per meal I was golden. My break down was:
    Breakfast- 30
    Snack- 15
    Lunch-30
    Snack- 15
    Dinner-30-45
    Snack -15 (if wanted)

I bought the book Calorie king. It has pretty much every food and restaurant you'd need, with a carb count for each item. It was small enough to just throw in my purse.

I passed have not had GD with my last pg's. But since I have big babies and my one hour was way off they still want me to follow the diet and monitor my sugars. It's pry a "good" thing in that I am watching much more closely what I eat. Good luck!

This is true and about the only positive. The GD diet really controls weight gain during pregnancy. I gained 60 with my first (not on the GD diet) and lost weight with my second. I'm currently down 7lbs this pregnancy. (Not bragging, I'm overweight to begin with)
