Thoughts on Mini-Cribs???

Our nursery is pretty small... about 10 x 10,  and  I am considering one of those Mini-Cribs I've seen on websites.   I'm hesitant, since I know regular crib bedding won't work in one of those, and I'm also not sure about how much space LO will have as he gets bigger.   Have any of you had any experience with these, and what do you think of them?   I'd appreciate some helpful thoughts on this one.   :)   Thanks!

Re: Thoughts on Mini-Cribs???

  • They are a waste. Once baby is a yr old you can't use them.
  • Loading the player...
  • I never understood the whole "unsafe after 1 year" thing with mini cribs.  plenty of 1 year olds sleep in pack n plays while travelling and no one every says that's not safe (or do they....?).  And at 1 they are definitely rolling around and standing/walking, so suffocation can't be a concern....and they look pretty sturdy, so I would guess weight isn't a concern (or else they'd have a weight limit, not age limit right?)

I just don't get it.  Feel free to edu-ma-cate me peeps!

  • Love them and wish I would have known about them sooner. I bought them for the twins and they are fabulous. They are super cute and really easy to move. They fit through the door frame so I can take it to different rooms. I plan to have them in our room for a while and it will make the transition SO MUCH easier. I plan to use it until they are 2. My 4 year could even fit in there just fine. I think cribs are kind of big. Baby always looks so tiny and rolls all around.
    I have these

  • @eltrain5 I have no research to back it up. It's just what I've heard lol
  • @mztwilson I've heard the same thing, and I think the ones I looked at in BRU actually said something similar on their tags...just couldn't figure out why :)

Maybe with then being smaller they aren't quite as sturdy? I personally would've much rather invested the money into a bigger crib that converts.

Op have you thought about getting a really nice PnP instead of a mini crib? at least the PnP could potentially last longer.
  • @ElTrain5When I was at BBB looking at cribs the salesman said they are not to be used after 10 months or 30lbs.. I believe it is the weight restriction.  I ended up going with a smaller footprint full-sized crib (https://www.amazon.com/Dream-On-Me-Cumberland-Convertible/dp/B003S3R6AI/ref=br_it_dp_o_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=1JBBNOQUJSA5I&coliid=I14XZDN4AVXNN8)   Good luck!

  • Have you checked out IKEA cribs? We love ours! They don't take up a lot of space but still use regular sized mattress/sheet. Some of our friend's cribs are monstrous compared to our cute little IKEA crib.

Were you able to use a regular crib mattress, or did you have to buy the IKEA one?
What style crib did you get?
Sorry for all the questions, but I am looking into getting one from IKEA too.
  • @stephpaez
We went with an IKEA mattress but I'm pretty sure you can use any crib mattress with their cribs. Their mattresses had good reviews and they seemed really solid compared to some of the plastic feeling mattresses I checked out at BRU.
    This is the crib:

Both the crib & mattress have held up really well (purchased them in April 2011.) We will be using them for the new baby.
    Good Luck!

I wonder if they are shorter and easier to climb out of and that is why it has the early age limit?

OP- You should definitely check out some lower profile cribs, like the ikea one. Some full size cribs are completely massive. My DS's room is 10x11 and we have a full size crib in there along with a full size dresser and some book shelves. Its not crowded at all.

  • Mini crib is fine when they are little but like pp have mentioned no good after 1. My mom bought one for her house for dd which was great when she was tiny and we were traveling and staying there for extended periods of time - one less thing to pack! But once my dd got older it was way too small for her and I had to start lugging the pack n play which is actually slightly bigger and sturdy/harder to climb out of.

  • We are getting a Stokke mini as it has wheels so we can move the baby to different rooms of the house without disrupting his sleep. The value-add of the Stokke is that you can purchase Stokke extensions to make it a "normal" crib and a toddler bed, respectively, as your child grows.
  • We're getting a mini crib and will use it for as long as baby is comfortable.  I've heard from many people who have used one well into the kids 2nd birthday and then transitioned to a big kid bed.

I learned yesterday that mini cribs are the norm in Europe.
  • @namaste I have crib envy...that Stokke is so awesome but I just couldn't swing the price tag

  • We got an Ikea Crib and are using a non-Ikea mattress. The Ikea crib has a smaller profile than some others and is still a full size crib. The price point for what you get (ours was $119 burn there's a few for $99 too), is also an added bonus. I posted a thread a month or two ago asking about the cribs. Lots of ladies said the cribs received good marks in the Baby Bargains book too. Search the Nurseries and Baby Gear board for Ikea Crib and there will be a bunch of mattress recommendations in that thread there too.

  • Thank  you all for the feedback!  I appreciate it.   I measured the room again yesterday, and it's actually smaller than I thought... only 8 feet wide on the wall where the crib is going.  I think we may go with the mini one for now,  and if we end up moving, like I'd realllly like to!,  we can get a bigger one if need be.   :)
