Lets talk external cephalic version

Yes, I know I have a looooooong way to go and plenty of time for baby to flip…but can't help but think about it if I was in the position to decide. Baby is breech…all my other babies have been head down by now…so I have been pondering this version thing my doctor suggested if baby remains head down into late 3rd tri. Would you do it if the time came? Or just opt for a c-sectoin? This would potentially be unchartered territory for me as my first 3 babies were successful vaginal deliveries without complications. Kinda thinking well heck…I had marginal previa…my placenta is anterior…so OF COURSE this baby will want to remain breech. Ha! Anyways, have heard it can be super painful for mom and stressful for baby...

My little guy is still breech too. I hope he flips. Didn't have any problems with my first. I would likely opt to try the version first. Then go for c-section of it fails. But I'm following....I'm curious what everyone says as well

I had the version done at 37 weeks. They got DS's head about 3/4 of the way around and as soon as the OB removed her hand, you could see him go right back to where he was. I didn't think it was painful, just a really weird feeling and a lot of pressure. They kept me there for an hour to monitor me but DS's heart rate didn't change at all. I would definitely try it, especially since it is more successful for S+TMs.

I have no personal experience with a version, but a mom in my prenatal yoga class did spinning babies a few weeks before her due date and had nothing but positive things to say about the baby turning

I would totally do a version before opting for surgery. That said, I'd also try spinningbabies, acupuncture and seeing a chiropractor before the version.

For me personally, I would do just about anything to avoid another c-section. So if it comes down to that, I would give it a try. The worst that could happen is it doesn't work and you'd end up with a c-section anyway.

Me too.

I will be doing everything in my power to avoid a c-section for a breech baby. If baby is breech later I'll be doing all of the stuff and looking into options for having the baby vaginally even if it's breech.

Yep. Thankfully there's a few doctors here that will deliver breech so I have options if that's the case! But this baby has settled into my pelvis and won't budge. He better stay there if he knows what's good for him!

Since you've already had successful vaginal deliveries, it seems like an ECV is a good option. We discussed it when DS1 was breach, but my OB said that he typically doesn't do them for first babies because the risks associated with the procedure didn't guarantee that you'd be able to deliver vaginally anyway. But he often recommends them for ST+Ms who already had successful deliveries, because the odds of the success were much higher.

This is my third and only breech one I've had. Even though he's complete breech (frank breech has a low success rate as does footling) and I've had other kids, my doctors still don't want to try. I understand there are risks, but it's annoying that I can't find anyone in my area who will attempt it.

I have started doing the 30 second inversion techniques on mybreechbaby.org and spinning babies to try to get mine to turn. She has been breech for three months now so I think she is getting too comfortable. I will see how my 30 week appt goes (so 2 weeks of inversions) and go from there

I tried a version with my first DS, it failed. But, for me it was worth a shot he was stable, they monitored the whole time. I also tried spinning babies and a chiro but none of that worked for me. He was especially stubborn!!
I would def got for the version again if needed, is rather not have another c/s.

I did a version at 39+ weeks and he didn't budge. I had an epidural, we were in the O.R. they did a good job monitoring DS. We did a c/s right then because I already had the epidural and he wasn't moving. I would definitely do it again!

This is the only situation I'd do a version in. The monitoring of the baby and the ability to do a c/s immediately if there was a need being the main reasons.

Honestly though, we're barely into 3rd Tri...there is a lot of time for our LOs to flip. My DS was frank breech at 27w and then transverse until 34w...when he flipped vertex and stayed that way. We have time for them to flip

I'll be the odd man out, I'd probably opt for a c-section. Or at the very least, I'd insist on being in the hospital, with an epi, with the OR standing by. I wouldn't want to be leaving without the baby at that point - so either successful version and induction or unsuccessful and c-section.

See, I would attempt the version. If unsuccessful I would wait to go into labor, see if LO flipped on their own. If not, (and I was in an area that I just couldn't find a doctor doing breech deliveries) then at least LO has picked their birthdate and we know they are ready. I wouldn't schedule a c/s just for a breech baby. What if you went for the version at 39w then didn't go into labor until 41 and 4 or whatever? That's almost 2 weeks of time that LO may have flipped on their own and if not that's still 2 full weeks of development that are important.

I honestly did not even think about timing…just assumed I would go to an appointment closer to due date and they would attempt it…which makes no sense the more I think about it. If it comes to that…if my OB office does not work this way which I would think they would…I will recommend doing it along with induction…should probably ask for more detail next appointment!

I am scheduled for our version to be done on Monday for our frank breech little guy and I will have to admit I am quite nervous about it. Dr has reassured me that she really thinks it will be successful for me and he will be monitored the whole time as will I and it is done in a location that if a c-section is needed right away or if I go into labor that they just bring me right up stairs and it would be fine. My hospital has 2 or 3 dr's that do versions and they have had a great success rate so I am hoping that this little guy isn't too stubborn and lets it work out. Who knows, maybe when I go in Monday and they start with the ultrasound he will have flipped on his own....we'll see. I'm just really nervous about the uncomfortable/pain part of the version.
