Sweet things make baby move LESS

Yesterday I inadvertently ate a lot of sweets (the seemingly "healthy" snacks I packed were all pretty high in natural sugar - kiwis, figs, applesauce, etc.) and I was a bit worried by the end of the day when LO wasn't moving as much as normal, and his movements were not really like his normal, powerful kicks. So I decided to take an hour and do a proper kick count when I got home. My husband brought home some orange juice and I drank a glass and laid down. LO barely moved 3 times in an hour - which is really slow for him.

I was a bit freaked but decided I should eat dinner to see if that would get him moving. After the smoke detector went off while cooking (nothing burned, I swear), he woke up and started kicking like normal. Then he was totally back to his normal movement pattern after I ate dinner (no sugar - fish, pasta and peas). I packed non-sugary snacks today and he's been pretty normal. But I just had a Starbucks via juice mix thing, which does have sugar in it and he's all still again.

Does anyone else find this happens? I assumed not being told I failed my 1-hour glucose test meant I passed it, but could this be a sign of Gestational Diabetes? I've tried searching Google but all I get back "try drinking something sweet to make your baby move", which seems to be the opposite for me. I have my 30 week appointment tomorrow so I am going to ask my OB, but maybe I should be more concerned right now?

Re: Sweet things make baby move LESS

  • I find my baby moves a lot after eating and especially around dinner time. He doesn't move a whole lot after I eat sugar. I wouldn't read too much into it.

  • That's interesting. Sweets do tend to get my LO going, and cold things work well too. I enjoy surprising her with ice cream, the poor kid.

I don't think it means much but wouldn't hurt to ask since you're going in anyway.

That's kind of what I thought. maybe he gets a "sugar high" and zones out.

@ashtog the cold water thing always seems to work for me/him, or hot tea too - I guess the temperature change?

I was freaked last night and lots of websites said to try orange juice/sugary juice so I tried that. Apparently this baby does not like sugar.

My husband was kind of getting worried about it too, so when he brought home the juice he also got coke and a Deep n' Delicious cake (my favourite) to "cover all our sugar needs" to get baby moving. He was kind of disappointed when I told him my "sugar coma" theory and I decided against eating the cake. lol.

I wonder if this means my kid won't have a sweet tooth/won't like ice cream. hehe. More for me :)

  • I think at this point I've ate so much sugar this pregnancy that LO has built up an immunity to it, it doesn't even phase it.
