3rd Trimester

Pregnancy and wisdom teeth pain..

I have 3 impacted wisdom teeth that plague me from time to time. Should have gotten them removed a long time ago, and I'm smacking myself for not doing it. Well, I definitely can't while I'm pregnant. About 4 days ago 1 of them started hurting me. Gum feels a bit swollen, but it hurts like a mofo.  I haven't taken any pain meds this whole pregnancy, and I really don't want to start now. I obviously can't get them surgically removed until after the baby comes, so I need to find some temporary relief. Any ideas? They will sporadically start hurting every few months for some reason. No clue what makes them start or stop.

  • They have to put you under for the procedure, cause mine can't just be pulled. Being put under while pregnant is a risk. Most dentists would want to avoid it.

  • I'm having wisdom teeth issues as well. Same exact thing where they'll get sore for a week or two and then quit. My dentist refuses to do anything about them until after baby. I'm sure most dentists would. Since you're already 37 weeks, pre-term labor won't be an issue. I doubt that they would become seriously infected in the next few weeks.

The only thing I do is up my Listerine rinses and do salt water washes. Also, tylenol. I'm not sure there's much else you can do.

  • Actually NyQuil swish helps numb the gingiva. Stay away from wiping stuff on the gum it can irritate it. Salt water and Tylenol will help. Don't be a stickler take the Tylenol!

  • Call your dentist. I've had gum surgery and many hours of dental work this pregnancy. I just took Tylenol for pain. Even if they're impacted or deep roots you don't need to be under usually. Plus as others have said dental health has a big impact on pregnancy!
  • You don't need to go under to have your wisdom teeth pulled.  However the pain meds afterwards might be an issue.  Rough situation, good luck figuring it out! :(

  • I had an excruciatingly painful wisdom tooth removed a couple weeks ago. The dentist cleared it with my ob and it was completely safe... Go get your teeth taken care of! I needed zero pain meds after, it was totally pain free once it came out. I've also had cavities filled. Your dentist will likely talk to your doctor first to clear treatment but it shouldn't be an issue.

Go in to make sure they aren't infected.  I had an infected Wisdom tooth once and it was a horrific pain!

It could also be the gum tissue surrounding them.  Over the last month my gums have gotten significantly more irritated due to hormones.

Swish with Listerine - that can clean the area as well as numb it for awhile.  Also, up your brushing and flossing around the area.  It will be sore at first, but feel better after a few days.

Good luck!  I hope you find some relief soon.  Tooth pain can be the worst!
All of this. It could just be infected, I had one of mine get infected before I was pregnant so my dentist prescribed me an antibiotic. I was waiting for my specialist appointment to have them removed when I found out I was pregnant, so I have to wait until after I deliver to get them removed now (I will have it done with full anesthesia).

You should go to your dentist to have it checked. If it's infected it might not have to come out immediately, if you are worried about doing it without pain meds, etc. An antibiotic can clear up the infection and you can have it removed later.

My gums have been really sore since I hit about 20 weeks, I think a lot of it has to do with your gums being more swollen and tender in general during pregnancy. Just make sure you keep the area back there very clean with brushing, flossing and mouthwash. I have a dentist appointment next week and I am sure my gums will bleed so badly, they bleed when I brush sometimes now!
